I spent the rest of the day in bed. I didn't want to move or see anyone. Esmeray, Sage, and Molly came in to check on me once in a while, which helped a little. They told me how Haydn was asking about me, which also helped. Around dinner time, I hear footsteps coming down the hallway. It's Esmeray, Sage, and Molly. They come in with smiles on their face, laughing.
"What's up?" I ask.
"Common, you need to hear this" Sage says excitedly.
"What's going on?"
"Just come with us Amethyst" Sage says, yanking me out of my bed and taking me to the dining hall.
When we arrive, the headmaster is at the front, facing all the students.
"I've realized that none of the newcomers have gotten the chance to truly socialize or meet everyone. So, to fix it, on this coming Friday, Haven academy will be putting on a meet and greet dance for all years to get to know one another."
Excited voices instantly arose from the room. I couldn't help but turn to Esmeray and jump up and down. Our first dance! It is going to be so fun! I scan the room and find Haydn staring at me. I smile at him before turning my head towards Esmeray.
"You gonna ask Haydn to go with you?" She says nudging me.
"No. I won't ask him, but hopefully he'll ask me"
"Oh he'll definitely ask you"
"How do you know? DID HE TELL YOU!"
"He didn't tell me, but obviously you two have something for each other. Everyone can see it"
For the next couple of days, leading up to Friday, the only thing people were talking about was the dance. Throughout those days girls and guys were asking one another to the dance. I am still waiting for Haydn to ask me, and it is stressing me out. What if he already asked someone else? What if he doesn't even like me? Is it all in my imagination? These questions ran around my mind faster than a jaguar. What made everything even worse was the fact that Clara barely ever left his side.
"God she's so desperate" I say to Esmeray as we watch Clara touching Haydn continuously.
"Whatever. He doesn't even look like he's enjoying it" she says with a disgusted look on her face.
"Maybe, but it's not like he's stopping her. What if they go to the dance together?"
"I doubt it. Don't stress" she tells me.
"I'm trying my best" she flings her arm around me. "Let's go. You have bigger problems to worry about. Like your knife handling. That shit is so hard to watch"
I push her off me. "Oh get bent Mere"
"What about Cade?" I finally say to here. "You guys going together?"
"Uhh no...Cade? Seriously?"
"You guys are always together. It wouldn't be a shocker to anyone if you guys went together"
"We're friends, and he helps me train, nothing else."
"Okayyyyy.....whatever you sayyy" She rolls her eyes at me and walks away as I stay back laughing.
"Hey, wait up. Or is Cade already waiting for you?"
Thursday. The day before the dance, and Haydn and I have barely spoken this whole week. I had basically lost all hope of him asking me. At this point, there is more of a chance for him and Clara to go together than him and I. That really pissed me off. I walk to breakfast with Sage. The whole way she's talking about Jace.
"Do you think Jace is going with anyone. Ugh, I would hate that"
"Just ask him out, he probably likes confident girls" i tell her.
"Seriously? I could never."
"Well then, someone else is going to get to dance with him instead of you."
"I really hope not" she groans.
That's when I hear it. "So Haydn, the dance is tomorrow, and I was just wondering if you wanna go together?" That voice. That nasty voice. Clara's voice. She asked Haydn. My Haydn to the dance. In that moment, I lose my appetite and storm out of the dining hall. That was the last straw. I run to the bathroom, in hopes that no one would see the tears steaming down my face. Maybe if I'd just grown some balls and asked Haydn, this wouldn't have happened. I stare at myself in the mirror. I am so stupid to actually think he likes me. I grab a paper towel and wipe away the tears and running mascara on my face. After cleaning myself up, I hear the announcement that our first class is starting, and begin to make my way over.
I enter the class and spot Mere. She waves me over and I start to walk when someone stops me. It was Haydn.
"Hey. Can we talk?" He asks.
"Yeah sure"
"So we haven't really gotten the chance to talk recently"
"Um ya, I guess you're right"
"Look Amethyst, there's something I've been meaning to tell you.
"If it's about the whole you and Clara going to the dance together, don't bother. I already know." I snap at him. He didn't deserve that at all. I mean, it's my fault I happen to be the biggest pussy of all time.
"Sorry that came out harsh" I say.
"Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. Yes, Clara did ask me to the dance, but I said no. I told her I want to go with you, I just couldn't find the right time to ask. And from the looks of it, I'm assuming you want to go with me, since you're jealous and all." He says flashing me a smirk.
"Jealous? Ok bud. I am definitely not jealous. Honestly I could've cared less if the two of you went." I lie.
"Mhm okayyy. So is that a yes?"
"It is" I couldn't hold back my smile any longer. I'm going to the dance with Haydn! I run over and tell Mere, Sage, and Molly everything.
"See Amethyst, I told you. You had nothing to worry about." Mere says matter of factly.
Tomorrow really couldn't come any faster.
