Chapter 13
Rosell
I looked at the courtroom once more. Today was exhausting, handling criminal cases are no joke. In this very courtroom, you will meet people committing heinous crimes.
It was a 7 year old kid, her dead bosy was found near a lake with no clothes on, some bruises on her arms and body as well as internal bleeding.
Kahit nadakip na ang sinasabing salarin sa karamaldumal na panggagahasa, the confisticated evidence the prosecution filed ay hindi tumutugma sa pagpatay ng bata.
It seems like the crime is committed by two person. The fact that there is no witnesses kasi liblib na lugar ang pinangyarihan ng panggahasa at pagpatay, makes the case more complicated.
I asked the prosecutor for the autopsy results, but the family refused getting the body autopsied. With only the external factors, we cannot pinpoint the original cause of death and the one who did it.
My attention diverted as i felt a pat on my right shoulder. Lumingon ako at nakita si Judge Dalva, the main judge.
"Sir..." I said and bowed my head a little.
"Why did you became a judge Rosell?" He asked suddenly kaya napatingin ako rito.
I sighed.
I have many reasons in my mind, yet i can't find a coherent words to speak it out.
" I also felt that way when someone asked me the reason behind my profession" he stated.
"What i want is to be a teacher" patuloy nito kaya nabaling ang tingin ko sa kanya.
He looked at me and scoffed. "But my father wants me to be a Judge. As a sign of respect, i became one. For his sake, alam mo ba kong bakit ayokong maging judge sa simula?"
He sighed as his smile faded and turns into a thin line. "It's because i am afraid"
"Of what Judge Dalvan?" I asked. He glanced at me for a brief moment before answering that gives such a big impact on me.
"Afraid that i might get wrong, afraid that i might give the wrong verdict and ruin someone's life because of my reckless decisions"
"You see, being a judge helds a big responsibility. The judge is the highest person in the court, but also the dangerous one. Ang mga desisyong binibigay natin ay pwedeng maging tulay para mapalaya at magbigay ng hustisya, pero kaakibat rin nito ang posibilidad na ito'y makakapag bigay dahilan para mas lumala ang sitwasyon...."
"... Once you become a judge, there is no room for weakness and pity. We give verdicts based on the law one has failed to follow, and evidences submitted by the prosecutors. Without solid evidences, whether we like it or not. We must give our decison." He continued
He looked at me and tapped my shoulders. "We may be judges, but we can't always serve justice. Sitting in those benches is burden, but leaving the bench is more harder. I am telling you these judge Keran, not to shaken you up. Alam kong marami kang rason sa pagiging judge mo, kaya kahit anong mangyayari sa loob ng courtroom na 'to. Don't be shaken"
"I won't judge Dalvan" i answered with pure conviction.
"Good" sagot nito at umalis. I heaved a sigh first before getting my casefile at minaneho pauwi ang hilux na dala.
