Watching Brian broodily skulk away, I became confused. He'd apologized for his abuse by treating me gently and taking care of me. His heart seemed huge in that way. He still had his mask on, so I didn't see his face after I smiled at him and accepted his apology. But he seemed... I didn't know what the word was.
I slowly walked out to the living room where I saw him drinking blood from a bottle, and then I saw him take his pill. I quietly sat down near him on the floor, and he seemed to pretend that I wasn't there. I decided not to push him, but I realized that he simply hadn't noticed me come in.
Brian almost tripped over my legs, and I heard him grunt. "Watch where you sit," was all he said.
"You could just say sorry. I'm sorry for being in the way. I thought you were ignoring me," I explained.
He pulled off his mask fully and sighed, leaning up on the table. He looked at me and then helped me get up. I smiled humbly at him and was about to leave, but he did something that shocked me. The hooded man gently guided me backward into his own body.
As his hands left my hips, they held my injured arm. One of his hands held my hand gently, and his other hand caressed my swollen shoulder. I didn't say anything, but I was as flustered as I was confused. If mixed signals was a person, it would definitely be him, I thought.
A few days later, I awoke to find Brian at the doorframe, silently watching me. He turned and left immediately as if I had caught him doing something he was ashamed of, but his calm demeanour played it off coolly. I sat up and realized that my pain was gone. My head stopped pounding, my sides still hurt a bit but nothing minor, and my arm was fine to move for the most part.
I could finally bathe myself! And do everything myself! But, there was a small part of me that, over the past few days, had grown to enjoy and love Brian's silent company while I soaked in the tub, or ate, or laid down to sleep.
Removing the bandages from my head and arm, and the sling, I only left the one at my wrist and torso. I could finally do what I wanted to do since two days before. After I had cleaned up, I went ahead to do what I wanted to. I found Brian staring at some eggs. I wondered where he got them, and if he knew how to cook them.
"Hi," I said quietly. As soon as he looked at me I did the thing I was aching to do.
I genuinely and sincerely hugged the hooded man. I wrapped my arms around his middle and held onto him for a few seconds. When I released him, I blushed and looked down. "I'm sorry. Just..." I nervously tapped the counter. "Thank you. For trying to be better. Most humans don't even do that. And it's funny..." I trailed off for a second, leaning on the counter. "You dragged me from my house one day... you put me in your cold basement. You abused me and beat me up a week ago. But you also caressed me as I slept, you gave me your room, and you took care of me. So... thank you for that."
When I finally looked up at him, Brian was staring at me. I stared back at him for a moment, and then decided not to make it more awkward for him. But as I turned to leave, he took my good hand and pulled me closer. "I don't know what it is, but you made me feel something good. Thank you," he told me. It was probably the longest sentence he had ever said to me. I smiled at him softly, and Brian kissed my two hands.
I smiled up at him as he released me. "Did you um... need help making those?" I asked. He nodded, and I got in between him and the counter. "Let me show you. Look, you take the egg and just lightly hit it... here," I was saying, and I took his hand from behind me. His elbows were at either side of my waist, but I was guiding his hands, holding them and showing him what to do.
When we whisked and seasoned the eggs, we did the same thing by the stove. But at the stove, I felt his body a bit closer to mine than it was by the counter. I showed him how to scramble the eggs, and I turned around when they were done. "Yay!" I said, raising my hands. But my injured hand hit his nose. "Ow!" I held my wrist. Then I realized what happened. "I am... so sorry... I didn't mean to-" I started.
But Brian simply shook his head, his hand over his nose. He shuddered, like, and made a sound that was like a mute person laughing. He IS laughing! I giggled and rubbed his nose. His laugh was strange, but it was amazing and good to hear.
I went ahead and made us tea, and he made our toast. We ate silently as usual, but the mood seemed much lighter than ever before. I even glanced at him a few times just to admire how his face was shaped. I was starting to become very fond of my captor, but I wasn't aware of it yet. And I wasn't aware of what was to come.
