nora's point of view

SEPTEMBER 2011 )

while the rink was starting to fill up with eighth graders, i took my roller skates out of my locker then sat on the cold floor trying to wear them on.

sadly, we had to cancel skating classes just because of westmore middle school who decided to occupy most of the place for middle schoolers before school season starts. i honestly hate middle schoolers but if it's worth the money then i'm obviously taking it.

i slowly pushed myself up then glid my way out of the room to the counter where robin was.

robin schmidt's one of the people i get along to in this place. he's also in charge of the people who rent skating shoes. he's a huge nerd though, but i don't mean that in a bad way.

“well someone's looking like a human disco ball.” he joked as he leaned on his hand.

ha ha, very funny.” i responded. it's not my fault that i had to wear something flashy just so i could guard the whole skating rink, our boss asked me to wear something shiny just so i could be seen easily—instead, i ended up looking like somebody's mom who time-traveled from the '70s.

“come on, i was just joking around. you look great, i'm pretty sure you'll handle the children well looking like that.” robin chuckled, walking to get another pair of roller skates for someone's kid. “also, nice skating shoes. are they new?”

“yeah, my sister bought me a new pair about a month ago.” i twirled around, showing off my skates.

“they're…glittery, and very…pink. do you even like pink?” he rose an eyebrow. “by the way, here's your skating shoes. have fun skating!” robin said as he handed over the pair of shoes to the parent.

“what's the problem with pink?”

“what? nothing! it's just that i've never seen you as the type of person who likes pink so much.” he shrugs as he rubbed his hands with a hand sanitizer. “i've never really seen you as a feminine person, even though you're obviously a woman.”

“who cares? it's just a color. besides, i feel like i could step on anyone with these babes.” i chuckled. “anyways, i better go. catch you up later?”

“you know it.” robin helped me open the lower door of the counter, making me crouch down as i pushed myself out.

i tried to skate towards the rink as careful as possible since i might hit running kids by accident. honestly, i've never seen this many children in this place before. i feel like i'm back in 7th grade, which is gut wrenching to even think about.

after getting in the rink i skated around the place, looking out in case a child is in need of assistance. not everyone knows how to skate so obviously, i could teach them. it's just a basic act of kindness.

since there were only a few people skating on the rink, i've decided to change the music to one of the songs i've been trying to choreograph for my students' upcoming recital. yeah, ever since i got this job, i had to learn how to dance properly too.
