We sat as the bear's meat cooked gingerly on the open flames. We hadn't spoken too much as I had taken some time to cool down. Dusting my hands on my thighs before I took a moment to wave him in closer.
"Can I sit beside you?"
I nodded.
"So I said I wanted to know everything so spill it"
His long claws scratched the back of his neck. An anxious air falling around us as the moment grew long and silent.
I shrugged, sighing "How about your name?"
My attention landed lazily on the swaying flames as he look his time to explain, piece by piece. My own questions laid dormant on my tongue while I waited for a break between words. Over the course of the next few hours I learned a lot about Olmuras "The Cursed One" or so he was called. I learned about his home which he called Nyare. Where they lived underground and created large and elaborate cities and tunnels. Although their technology was very limited they adapted very quickly to knew environments. Olmuras 'The Cursed One' is apart of an ancient species of demon called the Sruhn. The Sruhn are hybrids between the pure blooded Obsidian shadow demons and a Wendigo. He then went on to explain that the Obsidian demons are neutral demons born from the lost souls that flow out of an inter dimensional rift. The Obsidians are very tall, cloaked in a fine inky mist of shadows, with large bright crystal eyes and long slender tails, with long clawed hands, and scaly black skin that appears speckled with stars, glimmering ever so slightly in an unspeakable array of colours like a sun becoming consumed by a black hole. Unspeakably beautiful. While a Wendigo is a tall emaciated being with dark ashy skin, dark sunken red eyes that are set down deep in a white boned deer skull with long fangs. They also have very long limbs and white bone claws. The Wendigo devours anything in sight that's living. Olmuras goes on to say that it is a cursed soul of a human who died because of their greed, so they are forever immortal and never satisfied by food nor water and always deeply hungry to the point of severe madness.
While resting my head on my knees I turned my head to face him.
Staring quietly.
I couldn't interrupt.
There weren't any words that I could say to make things seem even remotely alright; I couldn't believe my ears. There were beings...whole civilizations of monsters that no one knew about! And suddenly I'm sitting here talking with one!
A sudden uncomfortable itch began on the underside of my wrist as I tried to absorb and make sense of everything. I began scratching and scratching and continued to scratch at my itch that didn't seem to want to leave.
"When born we resemble that of the great Obsidians, when aging we acquire more traits of the Wendigo. When adulthood is obtained the Sruhn are a combination of the two. Our lives are spent under ground...we do not associate with other species... The elders teach us to act a certain...way...if we ever encounter another species...like you."
"Alright..." I nodded trying my best to retain the information. Turning back towards the blazing inferno before me, quietly reaching over and picking up the stick nearest to me and checked the sizzling meat.
"It's cooked"
And handed four to him. His fingers grazed mine and one of the meat sticks slipped from my grasp hitting the floor. Olmuras stared at it for a second shocked before reaching for the stick of meat. Immediately I swatted his hand and snatched the dusty meat tossing it straight into the fire.
"Dust does not hard my internal organs"
Olmuras spoke staring at me as if confused by my actions. I just stared straight into the fire watching the dirty meat burn.
"Here"
My voice was curt as I shoved one of my meat sticks in his face. Allowing him to have one of mine.
Olmuras took it from my hand and began eating. A comfortable silence befell us as I nibbled on my first of three meat sticks that I held in my hands. I made an effort not to look over at him, although he didn't say anything the tense bewildered expression was no longer present.
"So why are you called Ol-...Olmoris the cursed one?...Are you male or female? And you said before that you were eight years old right? Doesn't that make you a child? And why aren't you underground with the others?" My questions came out rushed, messing up a few words as I went along. My face tingled with what I knew was a light blush.
