"Alright. Do you have what you need?"
"Yes...Do I truly require two knives and a miniature axe? When I possess such immaculate claws!"
"Yes! You never know what might happen!"Olmuras passed an irritated frown my way before we travelled out; making sure to close the makeshift door as we left. Our footsteps echoed loudly against the cold silence and dripping water.
"This way!"
I waved Olmuras towards the other opening, which lead out towards the river.
"That way?"
"Yes. How else do you think we are going to find abandoned camps and supplies?"
He didn't say anything else before following me. We walked steadily through the large tunnels and passages, the hollow flow of cold air becoming stronger. The wind shrieked past the entrance to the cave. It's blinding snow a glistening sheet of abysmal alabaster. I stood still, looking out into the moonlight river. It's murky water crashing rapidly against its icy rocks and frozen mud bank.
"Be careful of the river...It's low tonight but it's still dangerous"
His head bowed slightly in acknowledgement; glowing eyes trained on the icy water. Carefully we trekked up river, finding some large boulders that littered across it. I took a breath. A deep unease in my chest. Stepping out, my left foot met with the first boulder. It's hard rough surface saving me from slipping. I leapt out towards the second slab of rock, the splashing water like cold spears to my lower legs. Quickly and carefully making my way across the rocks I turn back to Olmuras; who is still rooted to the edge of the riverbank. His glowing fierce eyes the only thing I can see in the thickening darkness.
"Common Olmuras! It'll be fine as long as you're careful!"
In an instant Olmuras was three rocks in and with another graceful leap he was beside me. I began to feel a tendril of envy slithering up my spine whispering envious things about his long muscular legs. Taking a moment to collect myself I pushed my envious feelings away.We carried on quicker now.
The tips of my nose and fingers tingled painfully from the cold, I blew warm air into my clasped hands as my eyes continued to scan the trees and brush.
"We may have to walk out further to find some camps or leftover places..."
"It will be a two hour walk back to the cave...You look quite cold...shall we turn back?"
"No, I'll be fine but if we go too far then we may get caught by the sun, on our way back"We didn't talk much as we continued to trek through the deepening snow.
My frosted boots crunched the icy layered snow beneath me; causing jerked stomps. I hurriedly scuttled around frosted pines and barren branches. My eyes locking on the same familiar dreadful scene.
Torn tents, the splattering of blood now frozen in place. I sniffed the air as my boots met with the soft sculpted snow. Unlike all of the previous attacked camps the smells of blood, rotten flesh, and death was no longer present. I steadied my palm over my pounding heart, fear creeping in as flashes over past events unfolded in rapid speed through my head. I shook my head violently, ears ringing, a shocking pain in my neck seized my actions.Olmuras said nothing but stood still, watching my every move precisely.
A mute unreadable expression lacing his nearly unperceived face in the moonlight. Tearing my sight away I got to work. Grabbing the bags I quickly glanced into the nearest tent to the right of us. It's yellow material walls half torn and nearly collapsing. It was person-less.
Ushering Olmuras to take this one I hurriedly moved to the next one, a multi shaded blue and orange tent a few feet over. It's far back wall completely gone. As if cut cleanly and with purpose. Stepping in I grabbed at what was briskly deemed useful stuffing them roughly into my bag.
Hoping out of the tent I pulled my dim flashlight from my pocket and flicked it on; now unable to see at all in the pure night.
I began heading to yet another tent when my eyes flicked to movement and I stopped. An alarming panic shredding what little calm I previously had.
