Chapter 6 - Starry night

This picnic became another party, with food and games. The princesses and their friends played a game called « princess-lympics » where you have to win multiple challenges, but the princesses aren't allowed to use their powers. At first I wasn't really interested by the challenges, but it grew on me. The weightlifting challenge was intense. After a lot of lifting, Scorpia and Huntara were the last competitors left. I was surprised to hear myself screaming and shouting for Scorpia. She thanked me and insisted that I participate to the running games, so I did, to make her happy. Adora teased me on the starting line for the sprint, even if she knew I would beat her. And when I did, I bragged about it all afternoon, earning lots of eye rolls.

After sunset, people started to quiet down and Adora and I sat down beside the bonfire. Seeing me shiver, she took out the sweaters and blankets she had brought and I welcomed these with enthusiasm. I sat on a log with Adora on the ground, between my legs. I was lightly massaging her shoulders. Two tall women were playing guitar and a tiny man was signing, beating the rhythm with wooden sticks. Stars were beginning to shine over our heads. It was calm and I was enjoying myself.

«You know, I came here before,» said Adora. She stopped talking for a while. «When?» I asked. « Just after we closed the portal... I was overwhelmed, so Perfuma suggested that I took a break. I didn't tell anyone I was going away for the night. I just followed the trail leading to this lake and decided to stop there. I sat on the beach for a long time. I thought about a lot of things, but mostly I thought about you. I was certain I had lost you for good. I cried. I spent the night on the beach, feeling lonely.» I swallowed a big lump in my throat. I felt like blood was draining out of my veins. «I'm so sorry Adora. » « I know, Catra. I didn't tell you this to make you feel bad. I'm just amazed that I can be here, close to you now. If someone had told me at this moment that I could have you back, I wouldn't have believed them,» she said, taking my hand and kissing it. Her back was still pressed on my chest. I put my head in her neck and closed my arms around her. I hugged her for a while in silence. I felt nothing I could say could help, so I just focussed on giving her some tenderness.

Glimmer and Bow arrived with flower necklaces around their necks, signing loudly. « Hey guys, we're heading back. Need a teleportation ride? » Adora looked at my discussed face and answered for us .« No thanks, I think we'll stay a bit more and walk back. » When they were gone, she took my hand and made me follow her. «You know, the last time I came, I did see one interesting thing. » We walked through the now dark forest, lit only by fireflies. The voices of the party grew dimmer and we arrived to a clearing. There was an old wooden Lean-to under a gigantic twisted oak tree. It was surrounded by colorful prayer flags. « I think this is an ancient praying site. I don't think anybody comes here anymore...How about we spend the night here instead of walking back in the dark?» she asked. I thought it was a good idea. We gathered wood to make a fire in front of the lean-to and spread the blankets on the wooden floor. We sat on them, ate the tiny cake she received earlier and enjoyed the fire. She leaned on my shoulder and I stroked her hair. I wished this moment would last forever.

«Adora, why are you so good to me? I never did anything but hurt you. » She brought her head up and looked at me.

«That's not true!

- Honestly Adora, when I think about our childhoods, I remember making you cry a lot, and worrying you by doing stupid things and hurting our friends... And then, when Shadow Weaver played her little tricks with me, I came back to you to confort me. I was whining a lot and snapping at you for no reasons. After that, I tried to kill you multiple times...»

She seemed confused.

«I think you're forgetting a lot of things...Don't you remember all those times when you healed my fighting wounds with the first aid kit, when you made me laugh to stop me from crying, when you slept with me to comfort me, when you stole ration bars to cure my never ending hunger?
