But after Bucky and Steve saved her and helped regain her mind she had changed.
She was still sarcastic but her demeanor had shifted slightly. She was relatively the same person: funny, kind and caring. But she wasn't this bubbly girl anymore who found joy in everything. She went from being an optimist to a pessimist.
Backstory: Rae was a bright scientist, she worked in the research team for a small pharmaceutical company in Norway. Though she was very smart in her field and soon joined a University to start her research. Word got around quickly of her brilliance and it reached Hydra.
Hydra were working on a super soldier serum but they needed more scientists to conduct experiments and they didn't care whether these scientists were willing or not. They captured Rae and demanded she help them. She was extremely reluctant, not wanting to help these terrible people. But she realised someone would end up doing it anyway and so she accepted. She accepted because she wanted to use her knowledge to hopefully make the test subjects puld feel the least amount of pain and reduce their suffering as much as possible. That was the only reason she helped Hydra. If she had the chance she would have left, but she couldn't leave those people without at least trying to help them. She didn't have the power to stop the programme so this was all she could do.
Bucky Barnes was amoung those test subjects and was the one who stood out the most. Rae was assigned to keep tabs on him and record the science behind what made him so successful. The two of them, despite Hydra's severe influence on his mind, formed a strong bond and she did everything she could to help him.
Rae soon began to attempt helping Bucky remember his last life and try to help him escape. But Hydra caught on to what she was doing and as punishment they used her as a test subject too.
The serum worked well with her but for some reason it brought on some otherworldly powers that were far from just the super soldier abilities. She gained telekinetic powers and healing abilities and other magical qualities. Hydra couldn't understand what had happened but they were desperate to find out so they could replicate it. But when they hit dead end after dead end they realised the only person who could work it out was Rae, and she had been brain washed over and over that they would have no luck reversing it.
When Bucky was saved by Steve Rogers, Rae remained in the Hydra base. When Bucky was of his own mind again, he knew he had to get her out. He begged Steve for his help and they stormed the base, taking Rae with them as they left.
They helped her return to her normal self the best they could. Her mind was back, she was completely back thinking for herself. But she wasn't the same, the trauma had changed her.
