The clock glowed 4:50 a.m., but the stillness of the night was shattered by a sudden, desperate cry. To my left, he was trembling—sweat slicked his skin, his breath came in ragged gasps, and his fists pounded helplessly against the cold metal bed frame. Another nightmare had gripped him, pulling him deep into fear and confusion.
"Hey—hey, wake up," I urged softly, shaking him gently.
His eyes snapped open, wild and searching. Instantly, his arms wrapped around me, clutching me as if I were the only anchor in a stormy sea. His body shook against mine, and I could feel the heat of his sweat soaking through my clothes.
"Shh, it's okay," I whispered, pressing him close. "I'm here. You're safe."
He buried his face into my chest, seeking comfort in the steady beat of my heart.
"I hate seeing you like this," I murmured, brushing my lips tenderly over the damp strands of his hair. My hand cradled the back of his head, pulling him even closer.
"I'm sorry," he breathed, his voice cracked with vulnerability.
"No need to apologize," I replied firmly. "It's okay. We'll get through this together."
He hesitated, then softened. "Okay, love."
I gave his head a gentle kiss. "I'm here for you. But it's time to get some help. Therapy. We'll face it all side by side, mi amor."
His lips quivered into a weak smile. "Thank you. I love you. I'm so glad you're still with me."
Tears pricked my eyes as I held him tightly. To see someone so strong laid bare like this—it broke my heart. He needed help, even if he wouldn't admit it.
"You're stubborn," I teased gently, pulling back slightly. "Want some water?"
He nodded slowly, still fragile.
"Okay, just let go for a second." My voice was soft but insistent.
After a tense moment, he released me. I slipped quietly into the kitchen, passing the hallway lined with pictures—our memories captured in still frames. I filled a bottle with water and returned.
He was at the sink, splashing cold water on his face. I placed the bottle gently on the nightstand, then wrapped my arms around him from behind.
He turned into my embrace, holding me just as tightly.
"Please," I whispered, "get help. Do it for me, but also for yourself."
He sighed, hesitation lingering in his voice. "I know they're just after a paycheck..."
I kissed him deeply, then let him go, both of us needing to breathe.
"Alright," he said finally. "But we continue this in the bedroom."
I smiled through the tears, relief flooding me. We still had a long way to go, but in this quiet moment, we were together—and that was everything.
