Two years ago in Wakanda - Tara is 14

!! ANGST WARNING !!

Tara's pov:

I was chilling in the training room of the Dora Milaje on the new phone King T'challa had gifted me for my birthday when I saw a member of the Border tribe rush in, calling out my name. "Tara!" He said as he turned the corner and spotted me sitting alone on a bench by the lockers that line the room. "Yes?" I reply calmly, looking up from my phone and turning it off. "It's your mother!" As soon as he says that I jump up. "Where is she?!" I almost shout. He beckons for me to follow him towards the hospital ward. After about 5 minutes of running through the long corridors that fill the wide-ranging palace of Wakanda, we make it to the ward. Doctors and Nurses rush around, tending to the wounded members of all the tribes as they rest on the beds. Taking up all the beds in the large ward.

From what I was told, a neighbouring tribe had complaints and started attacking the Border tribe and the Mountain tribe so the Dora Milaje tribe and King T'challa went to make peace and a minor war broke out between them. The Border and  Mountain tribe decided to help Okoye and King T'challa which made the fight grow bigger and worse than before.

I rush around, looking to locate my mother when I soon spot her being surrounded by Okoye and a few of her other close friends. Pushing some of the older women out of the way, I stand by her bed-ridden state and take a hold of her left hand whilst Okoye holds her right. "What happened?! How is she?! Is she ok?!" I start to panic, smalls beads of sweat run down my face mixed with the saltiness of my tears that start escaping the ducts of my eyes. My questions remain unanswered as the Doctor kicks out all of my mother's closest friends, leaving only me, Okoye, and the Doctor. "I had some bad news." He says almost nervously as if he was intimidated by Okoye being present in the small sectioned-off room where we were located. "Spit it out!" Okoye starts becoming anxious, angered, and impatient, her accent raising by the second. "She's not going to make it. We sent a member of the board to go to her house and find her will if she had written one. He found it and I thought it'd be best for you two to read it first since it's directed towards the both of you." He quickly says, careful not to anger the leader of the Dora Milaje anymore than she already is, handing the letter over to us and heading out fast in order to help someone in the Border tribe.

I pass the letter over to Okoye allowing her to open and read it first since I'm too scared to do it myself. She opens it calmly, clearly trying to hide her tears that threaten to escape her beautiful hazelnut eyes, skim-reading it before nodding stiffly and handing it over to me before standing up and exiting the room. I hear her silently sobbing to herself behind the thin hospital walls which makes me even more scared to read my mother's will. Slowly opening it I notice that it is neatly sectioned off into categories, typical of my mother to make it as organized as possible. This small detail makes me laugh a little. A sad laugh. But a laugh nonetheless. I slowly read through the list of what possessions go to who until I get about halfway through.

"Tara Inokaza is to be taken care of by my closest friend, Okoye until she is of age(being 18) to where she may take care of herself."

"The money I possess will be given to her the day she turns 18, as will my weapons, Dora Milaje clothes, and anything tribal related."

"Okoye, if you are reading this I would like you to continue training my child to prepare her for if and when she is to join the Dora Milaje."

"Tara, if you are reading this I would like you to treat Okoye as if she were your second mother. Treat her with respect for she will be caring for you until you become a young adult at the age of 18. Treat her nicely."

This part made me ball my eyes out indefinitely. Tears spill repeatedly from my amber eyes, leaving tear stains on my caramel-coloured skin. "Why now" I mumble to myself, dropping the letter to the ground and watching as it gracefully falls to the beautiful marble white flooring.

I untangle my free hand from my mother's and drop down to my knees, my hands moving straight to my face to muffle the now quiet sobs. I stay like that for what seems like an eternity until I hear soft footsteps coming up behind me, a large hand gently placing itself on my small shoulder. I freeze up, not knowing who is behind me until the person speaks up. "You will be alright, please get up. Okoye has arranged for you to stay in the palace with us until further notice." A male voice says, and I instantly recognize the voice to belong to King T'challa. I nod slowly, standing up in the process as he removes his hand from my shoulder. "This way" he beckons for me to follow him and as soon as we leave the room, Okoye and a few other guards walk along beside us. Okoye moves to stand between me and the King whilst the others follow behind us.

The walk towards my new room is excruciatingly painful, the only sound being heard is our feet silently walking through the marble halls. Occasionally passing the odd members of the Border, Mountain, and Dora tribes. We arrive at a solid hard-wood door and Okoye opens it, allowing me and the king to enter before she enters and closes the door behind her leaving the guards to wait outside of the spacious room. "I hope this room is to your standards. As Okoye already lives down the hall from here and your mother's final words were for her to watch over you we decided it would be best in your best interest for you to live within these walls as well so that she may follow those wishes." He says after a small minute of silence. "It's uh-" I pause, pushing back more tears. "It's fine". I say, faking a small smile as I turn towards them. "I will leave you both to talk." T'challa gives a final nod before swiftly exiting the room, closing the door behind him.

After another painful moment of silence, Okoye walks over to me and pulls me into a small, yet comforting, hug. "You'll be ok. She's in another place now" I can tell she's trying to hold herself together to make her seem stronger but I know she's struggling almost as much as I am. "How did this happen? Who hurt her?" I cry out, clutching my arms around her neck. "She was aiming to protect the King and as she turned her back to attack someone who was close to killing him and then a member of the neighbouring tribe threw a spear and it hit her in the stomach" Her voice is slightly muffled as she digs her head further into my neck and shoulder.

It's silent again for what seems like hours before a knock on the door is heard. We pull away from each other and Okoye goes to open the door. It's the King. "I'm sorry for ruining your mourning but Okoye, M'Baku, and I need you in the meeting room. And I would like to say a few words with you before I go." He says to Okoye before pointing at me when he finishes the last part. Okoye nods and swiftly rushes out of the room leaving only me and the King of Wakanda.

"I know it's hard to lose someone close" He breaks the deafening silence. "She was the only family I had" I cry out silently, barely audible to the human ear. "I understand. I do have some words to say to you but I know this is not the best time. So before I go back to the meeting room ide just like to say that when your ready to hear these words, let me know" I stay silent and nod ever so slightly. He takes this as his cue to leave, and exits the room quietly, closing the door behind him.

I thought this was the day that ended it all for me...

But I guess I was wrong...
