ANASTASIA TWISTED THE MAN'S ARM, REVEALING THE INNER SIDE WITH THE MOST VEINS. Her fingers trailed down his arm, feeling every rough path of skin, scarred and calloused. She leaned over his body — her chest pressing against his — and grabbed a needle. Just as she was preparing to press the needle into his skin, the sleeping man jumped up.
He grasped her neck with his hand, choking her. His chest was pressed up against her back as he pulled her into the ground. She grabbed at the hand that choked her, digging her nails into the back of it. He inhaled deeply before letting her go and running away.
Anastasia gasped, air refilling her lungs. More annoyed than frightened of the man, she stood up, brushing herself off. She sighed deeply, picking up the tray he knocked over on his way out. She set everything back the way it was. Anastasia strolled out of the laboratory and around the better part of the basement. Stepping into the elevator, she took it straight up to the first floor. His voice echoed in her head.
Third door on left.
Anastasia wrapped her hand around the doorknob, opening it up to an empty room.
Your other left.
Anastasia looked down at her hands, holding out her thumb and index finger to form an 'L.' She walked across the hallway to her left and swung open that door.
"Ah, Logan," Charles said with a smile on his face. "I've seen you've already met Anastasia here."
Her lips curled into a smile, seeing her previous attacker standing awkwardly in a hoodie. "We were briefly acquainted," she teased. "You really get to know someone with their hands around your neck."
Logan's mouth slightly fell open. "I'm sorry about that, ma'am."
Anastasia held up her hand. She stepped into the room, closing the door behind her. "No need. I'm fine." She pulled down enough of her turtle neck to reveal no bruising or reddening of her skin where his hands once were.
Logan looked down, still feeling a tad bit guilty for his actions. "Are all of your..?"
"Powered?" asked an aged Charles. "Yes, we are. Like previously stated, I am a telepath. Anastasia is a bit more difficult to explain."
"Empath," Anastasia explained shortly, looking at Logan's furrowed eyebrows. "I can feel emotions."
Logan bit down on the inside of his lip. "Can't everyone?" he said arrogantly.
Anastasia grinned at the cocky man. "You'd be surprised. I can feel other's emotions along with making them feel mine. Also, if someone is thinking of something that has an emotional connection to it, I can know what they're thinking." Anastasia waved her hand in the air. "There's a few more things tossed in there, but that's like a 'we've-been-friends-for-years-now-and-I-feel-comfortable-enough-to-tell-you,' type thing."
