"Clay wake up!" Clay heard his sister yell from outside of his room.
A series of knocks were followed by her yelling again. Clay groaned and got out of bed to open the door.
"What do you want" he yelled
"I wanna go visit mom and visiting hours are only until 12 so hurry up and take me" drista said walking away.
Clay shut the door and turned back to his bed. He loved visiting his mom but the hospital was always a scary place. Clays mom has had cancer on and off for 2 years now.
She was getting worse and clay knew that, but he hid it from his younger sister so she didn't have to worry.
Clay stood up and walked over to his dresser picking out a pair of black sweatpants and a lime hoodie. He walked over to his nightstand grabbing his keys and phone.
He looked out the window to the house next door. He looked into the other window and saw George Davidson getting out of bed.
George and clay were childhood best friends but after high school they drifted. They even had a tree house that connected their windows together. Of course they would say hi in the hallway occasionally but other then that they never talked.
George was a volunteer at the hospital his mom was at. Clay always knew that George wanted to be a doctor, it was his dream.
Clay was awoken from his thoughts when he heard his sister yelling for him. He turned and walked out of his room and down the stairs.
—
When they had gotten to the hospital clay stepped out of the car. He felt his hands start to get shaky. He had been here multiple times but every time he came he was anxious.
He was always scared he would walk in with a mom and leave without one.
Clay and drista walked into the hospital and checked in at the front desk. Clay followed drista to their moms room.
"Mom!" Drista yelled running up to her.
Their mom was always tired so she usually wasn't awake when they visited. Clay walked over to his mom giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"Hi mama, how ya feeling" clay asked.
"I'm feeling fine" she said with a smile. Clay knew this was a lie, she just didn't want to worry them.
Clay and drista sat down on the couch. Drista talked about who knows what, she blabbed on to their mom.
That left clay alone with his thoughts. Fear came over him as the doctors walked in.
"Hi Mrs.craft how ya doing" a doctor asked
"I'm ok just glad my baby's came to visit" she said while looking over at them.
"That's good, I'm gonna have our volunteer come in to take some vitals is that ok?"
Clays mom nodded as the doctor walked out to get the volunteer. Clay was zoning out until he saw George walk in.
"Hi Mrs.craft it's good to see you" George said. Clay watched as George stared at him then back to his notepad.
"George! it's good to see you too, it's been so long since you and clay have hung out" she said.
George smiled at her then to clay. Clay watched him take notes on some of the machines as his mom went back to talking with drista.
George was always a smart kid. Clay missed him a lot, they were inseparable as kids. But people drift apart that's just how life works.
"Have a good day guys" George said walking out.
Clay stood up following after him.
"Wait George" he said
George turned around confusingly. He raised his eyebrows.
"Um my mom doesn't like to worry us, is she gonna be ok? She never tells us anything" he asked.
"Oh um I don't know if I can tell you that kind of stuff I'm sorry clay, I don't know much myself" George responded.
"Oh ok thanks anyways" clay said while turning around.
"But... I can probably tell you some stuff, just not here so I don't get in trouble"
"Wanna come over to my house tonight?" George asked.
"How bout we meet on the tree house just like when we were younger" clay smiled.
"Sound good, I get off at 6" George smiled back.
"Thank you George" Dream whispered.
George nodded and walked off. The rest of visiting hour was spent by clay smiling to himself and drista talking about every topic she could think of.
