Sarah:

I took a really deep breath while my new mother walked me downstairs to the front door. I was wearing a dark blue dress with black ribbons around the bottom. The ribbons gave it a scrunched up look. I wore blue because it was Paul’s favorite color. He was the nicest boy I could imagine. He was only a few years older than I was, but looked the same age as me. I was so excited and nervous. Most vampires decide their future partners when they’re very young. I really couldn’t mess this up.

                “Sarah calm down.” Mother laughed.

“I can’t mommy; I need this to be perfect!” She knew this already, but it’s what any normal parent would say.

“I know.” She sighed holding her stomach. She must be feeling sick again.

“If you need to lie down or something you can go. I’ll be fine.”

“No sweetie, it’s alright. Besides, once your father is finished we have a meeting with the council.” She said as we got to the front door.

“Again?” This was the second time this month.

“Yes. Things were very much out of order. You know, we’re going to have to do a lot to fix things up.” I could tell by her face that she didn’t want to have to fix things up. I wish there was some way I could make it easier for my mother and father.

Before I could speak there was a knock at the door. He’s here!

“Hello sir Paul.” The butler greeted him.

“Paul!” I ran to hug him and he hugged me back!

“Have fun you two.” Mother said as she walked off, probably to find father.

Lucia:

“Honey?” I asked as I rapped quietly on the door.

“Come in.” He was tired. I could tell by his voice and expression as I opened the door.

“How long is the meeting going to be?” I asked him. Hopefully we could hurry and get it over with, as we both needed a few more hours of sleep.

“It shouldn’t be very long. I think we’re only discussing the human rights.” This confused me.

                “What human rights?”

“They’re trying to change them again.” He shook his head.

                “Why is that?”

“They want to change a law in them, honey. It’s not a big deal, everyone has to agree on it.”

                “Which one?”

“Some of the vampires think that since humans are lower than vampires we should have whatever privileges we can find in them.”

“You mean discontinue the whole right?” I was dumbfounded.

“No, love. Just one of them.”

“Say what you mean then.” I was getting frustrated.

“The one that I broke.” He was quiet after that.

“Why didn’t you just say so?” I laughed.

“I didn’t know if it was still a sore subject or not.”

“I kind of agree.” I shrugged.

“With what?” He had diverted his eyes to the paper his pen moved swiftly on.

“The discontinuation of that law.” His head jerked up and his mouth hung open.

                “Why?”

“Well quite simply because they’re property. And while I know I was a slave and thankful for that law at the time, it should not have been a law. I mean seriously, you spend thousands on a human slave and you can’t even use them for everything? It’s ridiculous.” And even I couldn’t believe I felt this way.

“So you think we should vote for it to be lifted?” He asked still clearly confused.

                “Yes, I do.”

                “So we shall.”

*************

The meeting had been going on for an hour. The council now fought while we watched. Half of them screamed that humans were just like us only weaker, while the other half countered that their weakness is why we should be controlling them in every sense. So there was a lack of consensus, at any time we could break. Vincent and I had been talking in our minds for the last half hour, deciding when to speak. The time came when a chair went flying and hit a more quiet member in the head.

“Enough!” Vincent roared, standing from his throne.

“Our apologies.” The leader of the council said as they all bowed.

“Do you not care what we think?” He said authoritatively.

“We do, your highness, please give us your input.”  He spoke again, shocked that they hadn’t even bother to ask what we think.

“We agree that it should be lifted.” A smile came from the leader’s mouth.

“Thank you, your highnesses.” Then he turned back to the council, “The king and queen have spoken. We shall lift the law.”

I immediately felt terrible for what I had done, but honestly, I was no longer human. I was a vampire and this was my world and my people. It’s not fair to buy something and not be able to do whatever you want with it. What if you bought a notebook and could only write certain words in it. Or perhaps you buy a bed and can never sleep in it. Or what if you by a movie and can never watch it? And the punishment for doing all of these things was death? A slave is like a notebook, you should be able to do what you want with it.
