The next morning I awoke as the sun streamed in through the balcony doors. Cleo was asleep at the foot of the bed, like she always was. Vincent lay underneath my head on his back. His arms were wrapped tightly around me. My hand covered my stomach. I was happy. Then the events of last night’s dinner flashed through my mind. Krey!
I quickly but carefully got up from the bed and put on my red robe on a random chair. I glance back to Vincent and saw that his eyes were still closed, his hair falling across his face. A smile touched my lips as I quietly opened the door.
I walked down the hallway quickly. When I got to the infirmary I help my breath before pushing the door open. Krey was still in the same seat, holding Daeman’s hand. She was awake. That didn’t surprise me, but seeing him wide awake and sitting up did.
They were talking quietly. When the door shut behind me they both turned to look at me.
“I’m sorry…I just wanted to see how you were,” I said hastily, turning to leave.
“No, Lucia, it’s okay. Come talk with us,” Krey smiled as she spoke to me. Daeman smiled too.
“If you’re sure,” I said as I pulled over a chair to sit next to Krey. When I did I glanced at Daeman, I noticed most of his wounds were already healed. That made me smile.
He held his hand out to me, “Hello, I’m Daeman.”
I shook his hand and returned his smile, “Hi, I’m Lucia, Vincent’s wife.”
“Yeah, Krey here told me,” he said as he lifted their hands to his lips. Krey blushed and smiled.
My hand went to my stomach and I smiled. The bump was getting bigger, “So I take it you’re feeling better?” I asked him.
“Yes, I’m feeling pretty well. How are you feeling?” he asked, probably knowing that I was dying of thirst. Okay, well maybe not dying, but I really wanted Vincent’s blood again.
I laughed lightly, “I’m doing pretty well.”
“You look thirsty,” Krey commented.
I shook my head, “I’m fine. I can wait until later. Vincent is still sleeping.”
Daeman cocked his head to the side, “You can’t get something from the kitchen? Here,” he said, grabbing a glass on the other side of him and offering it to me, “take this.”
“No thank you. Human blood makes me sick,” I told him, looking down embarrassed.
Understanding flashed across his face. “She drinks from Vincent,” Krey finished for me.
“You’re pregnant, right?” he asked me carefully.
I didn’t mean to, but I winced. I wasn’t embarrassed about being pregnant, but I didn’t want to upset Krey, or him. Did he even know that she lost their child? “Yeah,” I said.
“What are you having?” Daeman asked, taking a sip of his blood. There was pain in his eyes. Perhaps she had told him.
Krey answered before I could, “They’re having a boy.”
I laughed nervously, “Yep, a boy.” It was still a new concept. I was having a son. I mean I’ve known for a while that I was going to be a mother, but saying ‘I’m having a baby’ is a lot different than saying ‘I’m having a son.’
“Did you want a boy?” he asked.
“I didn’t really mind either way,” I shrugged, hoping to drop the subject.
It was quiet for a moment and then Daeman burst out laughing. Krey and I both jumped. “I remember when I told Vincent I was going to propose to Krey,” He shook his head, “He told me that he was never going to get married or have children.”
“Yeah well I met someone that changed my mind,” Vincent laughed. We all turned around to see him standing in the door way. He began walking over to us.
He planted a kiss on the top of my head before pulling me up so I could sit on his lap.
“I don’t know how you did it,” Daeman shook his head.
I felt Vincent wince underneath me. He was obviously thinking about the same things I was: the torture. “We didn’t have the greatest beginning.”
“Tell me about it,” Daeman said as he pulled Krey to sit next to him. His arms went around her much like Vincent’s went around me.
“He bought me at a slave auction,” I laughed, remembering.
Vincent laughed too, “Before we even got to the car she ran away.”
I giggled at the thought. It was horrible at the time, but now it was quite funny, “Then when we got back I had already earned my first punishment…and it pretty much didn’t end for a while.”
“Hey!” Vincent cried, “I was nice to you plenty of times!” He tickled my sides as I laughed.
Once he had stopped I kissed him on the lips, hard, but still sweet. “You were,” I told him.
“So how do you feel?” Vincent asked Daeman.
“Like I’ve died and come back to life,” he laughed, but behind his eyes I could see a hint of pain.
