Chapter Thirteen:
Sam was extremely upset as they came pooling out of the house, rushing down the path to the sidewalk. "How could you not tell me about Isaiah?" He demanded, "How could nobody bring him up?"
They marched up the middle of the street, Bucky staring ahead. Sam looked to him, "I asked you a question, Bucky."
"I know." He muttered.
"Steve didn't know about him?"
"No, he didn't. I didn't tell him."
They approached a four way stop, Sam gazing back at the house. Josephine trailed a few steps away, wanting to give them space. "So you're telling me that there was a black super solider decades ago and nobody knew about it?"
It was still hard to believe that these people existed, what they were calling super soldiers. Even superheros, ones you read about in comics and watched in movies. Yet with every hero, there was always villains, and most of them were always just as powerful. To think Captain America was the beginning of it, or what they all thought was the beginning. It was all hard to process, even now.
Sirens broke her from her daze, eyeing a police car pulling up to a stop right in front of them. The lights swirled blue and red, another round of sirens went off before both doors opened and two officers emerged.
"What's up, man?" Sam eyed them.
The officer's brow knotted, "Is there a problem here?"
"No, we're just talking."
One of them circled Sam, "Can I see some I'D?"
"I don't have I'D, why?"
Bucky huffed, "Man, seriously."
"Okay, sir, just calm down."
The cop was young, probably new to the force as his hand landed softly on the gun at his belt. Josephine frowned, stepping in front of Sam. "Leave him alone, nothings happened here."
People milled on the sidewalks, spots that were just empty. Folks crept from their houses, watching a repeating theme they unfortunately knew all too well.
"I am calm." Sam said, "What do you want? We're just talking."
Bucky shook his head, "Just give him your I'D so we can leave."
"No. We're just talking."
Josephine nodded, "He's done nothing wrong."
The cop only looked too Bucky, "Is he bothering you?"
"No, he's not bothering me." He huffed, "Do you know who this is?"
She glared at the young man, "That shouldn't matter who he is. You have no reason to confront him right now, you know that? Your job isn't to harass and make stories to fit the narrative you want to serve. He doesn't owe you anything."
The other officer, much older, stepped towards his partner and mumbled into his ear, "These guys are Avengers."
Realization quickly set in, his eyes widening. "Oh, god, I am so sorry Mr Wilson. I didn't recognize you without the goggles. I'm really, really sorry about this."
Another siren echoed, their gazes went up the street to where another police car came to a stop. Sam shook his head, "Seriously?"
"Guys," The man sighed, backing up towards the newest addition. "Just wait here, okay?"
Both officers scurried away, leaving them alone with a growing crowd of spectators. Bucky turned to Sam, "Look, I didn't tell anybody because he had already been through enough."
