in which their reunion proved that lost time
doesn't always lead to a lost connection !

THE PRESENT: MARCH 16, 2021
╰────────────────────────╯alex was anxious, apprehensive even. darting his eyes to and fro, the black haired boy was desperately looking for something— anything within the small café he was now sitting in. alex currently held his unopened plastic straw amongst his fingertips, lightly grasping the thin utensil in between his index and middle finger like a cigarette whilst swaying it frantically. the feather light weight of the straw made him unaware that he was tipping the object back and forth, letting the plastic lightly hit the dining table with a small, hollowed out "plop" sound everytime each corresponding straw end hit against the wood.
adelaide had her fitzbillie's menu propped up against the café table, immediately acknowledging the subtle noises to alex's movement as she scanned the laminated card. tearing her eyes away from the food selection of the café, she peered over the laminated menu and looked at her ex-lover with furrowed eyebrows. "alex?" the chestnut haired girl probed softly, her voice being merely inaudible.
with the charismatic tone laced in her voice, the black haired boy immediately snapped out of his train of thought. locking eyes with adelaide from across the table, alex stood completely unaware as to what his dinner date said, so he simply mumbled, "hm?"
"are- are you okay?" the girl quizzed, tilting her head slightly to the side as she was filled with nothing but concern and confusion.
alex lifted his eyebrows, permitting his face muscles to go tight as he prepared himself to lie. "no, no. yeah, i'm good," the boy denied, when as a matter of fact he was the opposite.
the boy immediately let go of the straw he was fiddling with, letting the paper wrapped plastic flump amongst the wooden table out of defeat. alex swallowed harshly as he maintained eye contact with his ex-lover, feeling his stomach perform mere cartwheels once adelaide tilted her head a bit further. the recollection of what he saw outside of adelaide's flat complex waved over him like a tidal wave— forcing him to be sucked into the riptide despite his wishes. the secret he was holding felt like overwhelming water pressure, making him drown in such undisclosed information that he didn't know what to do with. the profuse secret was drowning him further, stealing every breath and every train of thought he could conduct through vast waters— he was drowning, he was dying.
but what was he supposed to say? was the black haired boy supposed to vociferate across the table and exclaim that adelaide's boyfriend was cheating? was alex expected to mutter such classified information that he didn't even have evidence of? was the boy even obliged into withholding such a secret? alex loved adelaide a lot, whether it was a friendly type of admoration or more, but he simply couldn't let the secret slip out of his tongue. what he witnessed outside of adelaide's flat was something that only weighed heavy on his tongue— begging to be said but unwilling to be spat. alex's shoulders grew heavier in the secret he was drowning in, the vast waters were heavily surrounding him now, engulfing him in guilt and stealing every breath of his. it was a prodigious emotion in a sense, an emotion that he hopelessly wished to get rid of.
