Burntkit bursted out of the nursery, holding his gray tail high. He looked around, then rushed toward Snakekit.

''Oh! You're finally awake!'' Snakekit meowed. ''I've been so bored!''

''Sorry, I guess.'' Burntkit shrugged, then looked at his adoptive sister. When he first opened his eyes and saw Snakekit, he was too scared to approach her, thinking she looked very intimidating. But he soon found out that she wasn't as intimidating as she looked, and now he spent most of his time with her. Burntkit purred, but then shook his head. ''Well, what should we do now?''

''No idea.'' Snakekit murmured and looked around the camp and at the other cats. ''Oh, I know! Let's go ask Stormpaw and Pricklepaw about their apprenticeship. We'll be apprenticed soon, anyway, so we should get to know our soon-to-be denmates.''

''All right.'' Burntkit looked around and squinted his eyes, trying to find the two apprentices. He then saw them talking near the apprentices' den. ''There they are!''

Snakekit turned around, and as soon as she saw the apprentices she rushed toward them, and Burntkit followed close behind her.

''Oh! Hello, kits!'' Stormpaw meowed when he saw them, dipping his blue-gray head. ''What are you two doing here?''

''Well, we wanted to get to know our future denmates, since we're going to be apprenticed very soon.'' Snakekit meowed, flicking her tail. ''What's being an apprentice like?''

''Well, it's nice, I guess.'' Pricklepaw meowed, his yellow eyes giving away his annoyance. ''We get to patrol and hunt, leave the camp, check the elders for ticks, just apprentice stuff. Now can you two leave us alone?''

Stormpaw opened his jaws to say something, but before he could do anything, Snakekit jumped up. ''Nope, not leaving yet. What's the forest like? Is there a lot of prey?''

Burntkit purred in amusement, but Pricklepaw didn't seem to find her funny. ''Why don't you go see for yourself?''

''Pricklepaw!'' Stormpaw glared at his denmate.

''What?'' Pricklepaw shrugged. ''It was a suggestion.''

Stormpaw rolled his eyes, then looked at Burntkit and Snakekit. ''You two better not leave the camp until you're apprentices. You know the rules.''

''Yeah, yeah.'' Snakekit rolled her eyes, and Burntkit looked at her, tilting his head. She seems annoyed... does she actually want to leave camp?

''Kits, come over here!'' A voice called.

Burntkit turned and purred as he saw Sootblossom, his adoptive father, call them from where he was sitting by the warriors' den.

 ''Thank StarClan!'' Pricklepaw mumbled.

Burntkit ignored him and rushed over to the tom, with Snakekit quickly following him. Burntkit sat down and looked up at the warrior. ''Where have you been?''

 ''I was patrolling.'' Sootblossom answered.

Snakekit got up before the warrior could say anything else. ''What's the forest like?''

Not again! Burntkit sighed, but Sootblossom didn't look annoyed. Instead, the tom purred. ''Well, it looks exactly like it does from inside of the camp, just that it's a lot bigger. The grass also feels soft, and there is prey almost everywhere. Thunderpaths too...''

''Thunderpaths?'' Burntkit tilted his head. ''What's that?''

''I thought Ebonyheart would explain that to you by now.'' Sootblossom blinked, looking surprised. ''Well, they're long path of stones that monsters run on. I suppose you know what these are?''
