Ashlyn had slowly recovered from her head injury, Big Red constantly making sure she felt okay. It gave her headaches from time to time, but she mostly felt fine. It was now February 13th, a day before Valentines Day.
Big Red was stressing about what to get Ashlyn. He had done this the first few Valentines Days they had shared for each other, but eventually stopped when Ashlyn finally convinced him it didn't matter what he gave her. Now he was doing it again, because she was more than his girlfriend this time.
Ashlyn, despite knowing Big Red was fine if she gave him absolutely nothing, was always searching for the perfect thing for him. She started weeks before, but was never able to find anything.
To Big Red, there were too many options to choose from. To Ashlyn, nothing was right. This is why she had written him a song a few times, and why he often gifted her a few things.
"I just don't know what to get him!" Ashlyn whined.
"You know he'll like whatever you get him." Sophie responded. "He's your fiancé. I'm tired of going through this every day."
"I know he will, but I just want it to be special!" Ashlyn stopped pacing and sat on her bed, sitting crisscross.
"Exactly. It'll be special if you give it to him."
"That's what everyone says, it's so cliche."
"What's the worst gift Big Red has given you?"
"Um..." Ashlyn thought for a minute.
"Exactly. Cause it's from him. He's given you flowers many times. That's done a lot, and as you might say cliche, but you loved it. Anyone could give you flowers and you wouldn't care unless it was him."
"I guess you're right. But... I don't know." She hugged her pillow, then threw it across the room. "Why is this so hard?"
"It shouldn't be." Sophie said.
"Shut up." Ashlyn retrieved her pillow. "You know I know you're right."
"Lizzie?" Big Red flopped onto his bed after unsuccessfully going shopping. "There were too many choices again!"
"Did you think there would be less choices two hours after you went the first time?" Lizzie asked, sighing as she turned to him instead of her homework.
He stuck his tongue out. "She always gives me the sweetest thing! Every year I try harder but her gifts just get better and better."
"Ever thought she tries harder each year?"
"Duh."
"No, I mean because she thinks your gifts get better."
"Unlikely." Big Red denied.
"Fine. Just... don't get her something, take her somewhere." Lizzie suggested.
"She'd probably like that."
"I told you, she'll like anything."
Ashlyn assumed Big Red was tired of her always writing him songs (she was far from correct), but decided on it again nonetheless. She always had new things to say to him.
This time, she had writer's block. She couldn't come up with a melody, and only had a few lyrics she didn't even like. Eventually deciding to take a break and get fresh air, since she was hot, she went on a walk.
When Ashlyn got back to her dorm, she got back to work. She hadn't gotten any ideas on her walk, but felt refreshed, other than the fact she was sweaty. She worked for about an hour before giving up. She was still sweating, and she didn't feel good either.
