P A R I S
I rushed out of his house and allowed the tears of anger to ruin my makeup. "Just pour em all outta your soul baby girl" his voice resonated in my mind. I pulled out of Bruno's driveway cursing under my breath.
''Who needs him anyway. Five years, but I didn't die, did I? So, to hell with him!'' I mumbled to myself as I turned up the volume of the radio just to realize that our song was playing. I changed the station, "And that was Loving you by Paris Banks featuring Bruno--" I changed it again until I found myself listening to soft rock--November Rain by Guns N Roses. It cooled me down a little along with the coffee that I got at a drive-thru.
"Hey you're Paris Banks!" A middle-aged cashier noticed. "Oh my goodness, I love your song!"
"Aw, thanks," I smiled.
"Yeah girl, I keep bumping that shit all day every day. You bringing back the younging' in me, child. Keep doing whatchu doing. We need more of that spark in today's music." she shook her head. "Anyway you have a good one, girl."
"You too," I smiled and merged into the traffic. Great. I sighed to myself.
I returned home to a soft melody playing from downstairs. I frowned when I saw Phil's back. He turned back to face me and sat his glass of wine onto the pool table.
"Baby, you're back," I said, surprised that his business meeting didn't last three days as he said it would have lasted.
"Got cancelled last minute," he said. "Where were you? I tried to call you but your phone was switched off."
"I...really?" I searched for some words. "I was just driving around town, you know, kinda seeing what's new."
He stepped forward and shoved a strand of my hair behind my ear. "I have a hard time believing that, baby."
I shivered at his firm hands that stroked my cheeks. He backed up slowly, still eyeing me.
"Have you been crying?" He remarked.
I shook my head, "No baby, you know how teary I get every time I yawn. It's been a long da--"
"Paris, why are you lying to me?" he released as he threw his hands in the air.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I bit my lower lip.
He gestured his hands, "Of course! I'm just another mad nigga who don't know what I'm talking about! You come in here at one in the mornin, telling me shit like 'oh i been drivin around town lookin for some' new!' c'mon ma, my eldest daughter could come up with a better lie than that bullshit you just made up."
''Okay, alright, damn," I said. "I was at the studio. I had some unfinished business to deal with."
"What business? I'm your producer and manager, I keep track of your shit, so what kind of business could it possibly be other than you fucking my best friend!" He spat.
I rubbed my temples, "No Phil, don't say that!"
"The truth? You scared the truth wouldn't come out?'' he shot.
"We ain't fucking though!"
"Are you aware that you're a married woman?"
"Phil..." I tilted my head. "Philly..."
"Don't Philly me when you've been Philling Bruno 'stead of feeling me this whole time." he spat.
"Baby don't do this...not tonight, please." I went over to hug his neck but he shoved me away causing me to trip on my own feet.
"You'll be taking a pause from the studio this week."
"But Phil, you can't do that! My record label wants my album done by next week and we only got what, three songs recorded! Come on, you can't do this."
"I can do whatever the fuck I want, just like you can do whatever the fuck you want and come back home at one in the morning."
I watched him climb up the stairs as I called onto his name in vain. I closed my eyes shut and let the tears fall out of my eyes.
B R U N O
It was now 2 in the morning and a yawn still hadn't escaped from my mouth. I decided to hit my grand piano which was collecting dust. I hadn't laid my fingers on this baby in a while because I was always on the keyboard or the drums set. I sat on the small stool and began playing a few simple keynotes that would go along with the flow of my lyrics.
''Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
'Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name''"Got it!" I wrote the piano chords down on my notepad and continued improvising until I fell asleep on the piano.
The next morning I woke up to a doorbell. I lazily walked upstairs to open the door and found Hannah standing in a dress and some chucks with a wide smile spreading across her face like a five year old. I rolled my eyes because I was tired and I wasn't down for no jokes though.
"Morning sleepy head," she stepped inside and looked around my messy house.
I rubbed my eyes and yawned, "What are you doing here, Hannah, it's..."
"It's three in the afternoon. Rehearsal time, remember?" she cocked a brow. "You weren't at the main studio so I came here to check out what's up." She answered her ringing phone, "Yup, he's alive. Just slept in, that's it. Should we rehearse at the main studio or at Bruno's studio? Ok cool."
"Ah, shit, I completely forgot," I rubbed my temples. ''Give me a minute to brush my teeth.''
"Phil and Ari are on their way,'' she shoved her phone in the pocket of her jean jacket.
I went to the bathroom. I splashed some water onto my face and brushed my teeth. I gargled some mouthwash and I was good to go. I met Hannah in one of my living rooms, who was sitting next to Geronimo playing Grand Auto Theft.
"Nimo," I whistled. "Come here boy."
I poured some dog food onto his bowl and sat it on the floor. He dug his muzzle into the sea of eukanuba.
''Alright, Hannah. I wrote a song last night, wanna check it out?" I ran my hand into my curls.
She nodded and paused her game, "Let me hear it."
I smiled, "Let's go down--"
Boom boom boom
"Damn, has Phil heard of a doorbell before," Hannah noticed. "This dude can break your door any minute!"
"Sometime that shit ain't loud enough," I shook my head as I went to open the door, "Hey man, what's good."
''We've got an hour to record your two last songs, let's get to it." Phil walked past me without looking at me nor dapping me like we always did.
I cocked a brow and shot Ari a look who looked just as confused and shrugged.
"Aight, well everything's already set downstairs and I was just about to show Hannah the new song that I wrote for--"
"New song?" Phil interrupted. "We got enough songs."
"I know, but I'm not feeling one of them. I came up with a new one and it really means a lot to me. It's real simple and it will only need my grand piano, no other instrumental."
After performing my song, Ari and Hannah were down with it and feeling it.
"Nice one man, real smooth, the ladies will like it," Ari encouraged.
"I'm sure whoever this song is for will probably make her cry, it's beautifully written, Bruno..." She nodded.
"Thanks guys, coming from y'all means a lot to me," I smiled.
"Phil what do you think man," Ari nudged him.
"It's aight," he glared. "Wonder who this one's about this time.''
