Nine

It's been a week since we left home, and I'm really starting to miss moms cooking, Inos annoying blabbering about how cool Sauske is, and even dads weird interrogation stories.

"Anko Sensei," I speak up groggily, "do we really have to wake up this early every day..?"

She smirks, "every successful person wakes up at 4am on the dot, so really you're lucky that I'm giving you two extra hours. Now stand up, you lazy maggots, and catch us some breakfast."

"Nyaaaa," I grumble as I get out of my sleeping bag and crawl lethargically with eyes half lidded over to the river on all fours.

"Suzie, don't be such a dramatic," sensei says, arms crossing over her fishnet top.

"But its 6am!" I cry.

She chuckles, and I frown, "don't laugh at me!"

Smiling, she retorts, "then don't give me a reason to," and continues a few small chuckles.

I make a sad, "myaaa," sound, and turn my attention to the water. Gotta wake up better...

The next thing I know, I'm dunking my head into the river.

That was COLD.

My eyes flash open under the water, and a dash of silver catches my attention.

My puffy, cheeks filled with air face swishes back and forth... until I see it again! Fish!

I launch the rest of myself into the water, and reach for one, but it slips past me.

When I burst to the surface for air, Tsudon is awake and looking at me like I'm some idiot, which to be fair, he's not entirely wrong, "what're you doing in the river?"

"There's fish in here!" I exclaim excitedly.

His brows scrunch, "okay..."

I throw my arms around grinning, " 'okay' help me catch them!"

"No."

I deadpan, and Anko Sensei takes over for me, she points my direction, "Tsudon, get in that river!"

Mai walks over, "but wouldn't it make more sense if I just do this," she does some handsigns, says a jutsu, and water holding a school of fish splashes out onto the riverbank, flopping and gasping.

"Ahh, you guys are no fun!" I pout.

Anko shrugs, "whatever works. I'll start the fire up again, you two go get some sticks, and Suzie, you go find us some edible plants like yesterday."

"Hai Sensei," we chorus, them standing beside her and me wading through the water to get back up over the bank.

I never realized just how practical it is to have knowledge on plant life... I always thought it made me stranger than I already was, but I'm starting to think that everyone else is strange for not knowing that dandelions are edible!

The three of us walk together for a bit, before I split off down where the ferns were.

"Pst."

My head swivels from my crouched position, what the..?

"Pst, hey kid, over here," whispers a voice from behind the ferns.

I pull out a kunai, "who's there?"

A large luna moth bursts out of the brush, and up into a tree branch, "woah woah woah! Kid, kid! Put that away!"
