When you woke up the next morning, you remembered the argument you had had with Thorin yesterday. It made you feel sad, thinking how you had lost a friend. It made you remember how angry he had made you too, and you felt miserable.

You woke Finley up and went down to buy yourself breakfast. You sat Finley down at your regular spot, and walked into the kitchen to buy your food. The landlady smiled when she saw you, but it wasn't the usual smile she gave. This one was knowing, as if she had a great secret. She then proceeded to hand you two plates with eggs and bacon on them.

You shook your head. You always had oatmeal for breakfast, it was all you could afford. "You know I cannot buy this."

"It was bought for you." The landlady said, pushing the plates into your hands.

"By who?" You couldn't think of anyone who would be willing to spend coin on you and your son.

"This came with it." The landlady pulled out a slip of parchment, and set it on the side of one of the plates. You thanked her, and brought the plates out. Finley was overjoyed to have such a treat. He ate his eggs and bacon happily, while you pushed yours around your plate.

You waited until Finley finished his meal and left to go play before opening the note. The handwriting was cramped, but legible.

If I could take back all that I had said, I would.

The note wasn't signed, but it didn't have to be for you to know who this was from. You were surprised, to say the least. This was not what you had expected. But if Thorin thought that you were going to be so easy to forgive, he was wrong. You went to toss the note away, but you found yourself unable to. Instead you slipped it into the pocket of your apron and left for work.

There was a lot to do, like usual. A few dresses to finish, clothes to patch, washing to be done. You rolled up your sleeves like you did each day, and worked, keeping an ear out for customers entering the little shop. It wasn't until well past midday that you heard a customer enter. You stood up, smoothed out your skirt and left the back room.

There was a dwarf standing there, but it wasn't the dwarf that stood there nearly every day. Instead, this one was blond, with braids in his hair and a braided moustache. You realized you had seen him before; he had been there last night at the inn. "How can I help you, master dwarf?" You asked, trying to curtsey the best you could. You were nervous. Why was he here?

"Actually, I'm here to deliver something to you." The dwarf had a kind smile, which soothed your nerves. He picked something up from the ground, and put it on the counter in between the two of you. It was a basket. "Before I take my leave, I want to thank you."

"Thank me?"

"For making those lovely dresses for my fiancée." He smiled again, and you realized who you were talking to.

"Oh! I was honoured, my prince." This was Fili, Thorin's oldest nephew.

"Please, call me Fili. I'd also like to thank you for making my uncle so happy." And with that, he turned around and left the shop.

You had made Thorin happy? You began to look into the basket, peeling back the cloth that covered it to see bread, cheese, fruit and a few cakes. There was also a small jug of water. Your stomach rumbled slightly. You never ate lunch, because you were saving that money. There was a note at the bottom of the basket.

You should reward yourself. You work so hard, (Y/N).

You couldn't hide your smile. Though he made no mention of it, Thorin had noticed that you never ate lunch. While he always brought something to eat with him, or ate before coming to Dale, you just worked through the day, ignoring your empty belly.

You ate the food, slipping the note into your apron pocket with the other one, before getting back to work. You continued on like this till dusk set in and you locked up for the day. You took the usual way back to the inn, thinking about the notes in your pockets and the kind gestures Thorin had shown you. 'He seems to be very sorry. But why keep sending notes? Why not tell me himself?'

You reached the inn, starting the go around back but stopped in your tracks. In front of the inn, you saw Thorin and Finley. You watched as Thorin knelt down on one knee next to him, whispering something in his ear. Finley smiled wide, and you watched as Thorin drew something from the cloak he was wearing, wrapped up in cloth. Thorin slowly unwrapped the package, revealing a small scabbard, with a sword in it.

You watched him hand it to Finley, whose eyes had gone wider than you had ever seen them go. Thorin handed him the small sword, before looking up and spotting you. You smiled, your heart practically squeezing with how much you loved him at that moment, realizing what you felt for this dwarf.

You made your way towards the pair, feeling a little giddy. "Mummy"! Mummy look!" Finley jumped up and down to get your attention, to show you the little sword. "It's for me!"

"Finley, could you take the sword out of its scabbard please?" Thorin asked him, and began to instruct him on how to use it, getting him to test it out. Then he looked to you. "It seems my measurements were correct."

"You made the sword?" You were speechless.

Thorin nodded, still watching Finley closely as he swung the blade around. "It's the reason why I sent Fili to give you your lunch." 'So that's why.' You thought to yourself. 'He was busy forging the blade.' "I thought since Finley doesn't have a father, there would be no one to make him his first sword. Or teach him how to use one." Thorin seemed nervous now, fisting and unfisting his hands.

"Thank you." You whispered, tears coming to your eyes. You couldn't believe he had done this for you. For your son. He had given Finley something you could never afford to give him, a weapon and a teacher.

"I want to apologize. I was blind, and angry last night. So many people have lied to me, (Y/N), and when I thought you had lied to me...but that's no excuse. I had insulted you and hurt you without knowing the truth, or waiting for you to explain. But I was hurt that you would keep such an important part of your life from me."

You nodded, still so touched with the gift he had given your son. "I was going to tell you eventually, Thorin. I just...Finley is all I have in the world. He was the only good thing to come from my marriage. He was and is the light of my life. And I have to protect him, which means waiting before introducing him to new friends."

"I understand that now. And I'm sorry for not understanding before. Can you forgive me?"

You didn't even have to think about it. "Of course I can, Thorin." You both watched Finley play for a bit longer. When the sun finally set and it was time to go inside, you looked down to see your small hand was in Thorin's larger one. You weren't sure how long you had been holding hands. But you knew you loved it.

******************************

You and Thorin started courting, and he began to visit you and Finley in Dale so much that his duties as King Under the Mountain started to pile up. To solve the problem, he had you and Finley move into the mountain with him. Thorin had already become a father to your son, loving him like his own. Fili and Kili gave Finley brotherly figures he could look up to.

Eventually, you tied the knot and married Thorin, and your life was complete. Finally, everything was as it should be.
