I was out of the Safe house by dawn the next morning, I wanted to be by myself before the guys and I were shipped off to the other Main camps outside of the District. It was still dark out but the sky showed hints of light blue and yellow over the horizon. The air was cool and I could feel it through my gear, but my skin showed no signs off affection towards it.
Around six am in the morning I headed to the Main Hall and entered through the double doors to the conference room seeign everyone had already been there, I waas stared at by everyone for a couple seconds as if I did something horrible. I could never see why these people care for me, I didn't care for them, even my mother for what she's doing. I can't see her like that anymore.
I stood be the doors the my hands behind my back as the conference continued, I had it on my mind that in two hours I would have to leave with my army dogs to take out a group of infected that may cause trouble for another main camp.
The confrence was over just basically going over a game plan for me and my team when we make our depart knowing we weren't going to be back the next day because Govener wanted us to be stationed there for a while. I walked out and felt someone's hand on my shoulder tugging it back; it was my mother.
"Serene, please understand what we're doing. It's time for a new era, a cure for people." Her voice was shaking from fear of loss but I couldn't say anything. I have gone my entire life without speaking to anyone but her, in private though.
I shrugged off her hand off my shoulder and continued walkign to the lift pad where the helicopter was ready to go and waiting, inside were my men buckled up and prepared for war it seemed like. I climbed in and the helicopter took off.
It was going to be a long flight there so I just sat down next to David and just relaxed.
"So Serene is it?" David began speaking to me but I didn't care.
I couldn't tell what the others staarted talking about because I bloacked them out, i was tired of everything so i thought I would just get some shut eye before we go kill anything.
...
I woke up to find out that we landed and everyone was gone, maybe they had just wanted me to get some rest? I looked around from my sitting position real quick to find that even the pilot was gone; odd. I unbuckled myself and got up getting out of the aircraft standing in a pool of blood on the ground.
I looked down but didn't find a body but there was a trail leading into the main camp. I grabbed my 22 magnum from it's holster and gripped it as I walked into the camp. It was epmty, not a sound was made, nor stir in the air by the wind. Keeping my grip tight on the gun, index finger ready at the trigger I made my way around, stopping every so often to check behind walls for safety.
This didn't make sense, where was everyone? As soon as I turned my back to head out, bodies; dozens of bodies were piled on top of one another, blood staining their clothes and a giant blood mass poured out. I took a step back to avoid stepping in blood then I saw my mother, she was dead. I was lost staring at her wonder how I could have let this happen until I saw a slight movement next to her body.
I ointed my gun at the twitching body part and then another one twitched from out of the corner of my eye. By instinct I aimed my gun at it and stared intensly at it until it moved again. I knew what was happening; they were turning. This wasn't good, a colony of infected freshly turning would be unstoppable from mass destruction because of their hunger. The feeling of epmtiness inside your stomach is unbearable until you feed, and once you feed it's hard to stop.
...
I was waken up by the sound of car horns to which my eyes suddenly opened up as well as the jerking of my head. I looked around to find my men talking with some of the other guys from the camp about how the main district sent us for cautionary protection. Taking my gun I hopped out of the helicopter, once I did so my men all stopped talking to turn to face me. I nodded them off so they could continue what they were doing, so I walked into the camp's boreders to find out our orders.
