Excerpt one of Layla's diary:

Dear diary,
I have never seen the Curtis brothers more sad. Today was their parents's funeral. Darry showed almost no emotion, but Ponyboy and Sodapop were crying. Steve was trying to comfort Sodapop, and was eventually successful. Dally seemed really upset too.
I know he really liked Mrs. Curtis. He would always tell Ponyboy, "You got quite a mom. She knows the score."
Poor kid. Thirteen and orphaned. The state is seriously thinking about separating the three, but Darry is a legal adult. He can take care of them! Heck, I ain't a legal adult, and I can take care of myself.
My mom and dad always fight, and usually one leaves for the night. Or a week. A month. Johnny is crushed by this. I think the Curtis parents were planning to adopt him. You know this. I've had you for a while.
Anyway, Dally Winston. How long have I had a crush on him? Two years, I think. Someone's calling me.

Entry one describes Curtis parents funeral and state plans to separate the children. She has had a crush on Dallas Winston for two years. Her parents always fight. Entry completed seven months before.

Suspects:
Dallas Winston
