Winnifred Winters sat on the couch writing a new story when she was disturbed by loud banging on the door. Surely Morgan and Fay couldn't be home by now, they had left not even an hour ago. Winnie put her pencil down and sat up straighter and waited to see if the banging would come again, just in case she was imagining it- and she was known for having a big imagination.
When the banging didn't come back, Winnie thought she was in the clear and picked up her pencil again. It was just your imagination. She hadn't gotten three more words down when the loudest and final bang rang through the air. Suddenly, people started filing in, they had uniforms on and shock batons; who Winnie had been told to believe they were the guard.
After her initial shock of the situation, she dived behind the couch, she had no time to get to the vents- what she normally used to hide in. Inside, Winnie was freaking out, there had never been this many guards, she wasn't even in a good hiding place, and to top it off she was much more noticeable with age. It had been much easier to hide when she was smaller- although harder to comprehend.
Winnie squeezed her eyes shut and hugged her legs to her chest, Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us. , she replayed over and over again in her head. Her sister had taught her that saying when she was little. Whenever Winnie would get scared, her sister would make her say it repeatedly, until she got the hang of it herself.
Winnie heard the steps and voices coming closer, so far they had only been searching the other room. She scooted closer towards the couch. Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us. Her heart was racing at a million miles an hour. She was so scared, she hadn't realized it but there were tears rolling down her cheeks. What if she never got to see Fay or Morgan again? What if they got into trouble because of her?
The footsteps kept getting closer and closer, "Tell me where she is!" came the gruff voice of who Winnie assumed was the leader. This only scared Winnie further, now she knew they were looking for her.
"I've already told you! I have no idea what you're talking about!" came a voice all too familiar to Winnie- Morgans. Winnie let out a quiet sob at the sound of her sister. Immediately she clasped a hand over her mouth as the tears kept coming. She hoped no one had heard her, but the silence that enclosed the room made it obvious that she had been found.
"Move that couch." said the same commanding voice as before.
"No!" again from Morgan. Winnie could hear her start struggling against the guards.
Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us. Fear tricks us.
The second she felt the couch jerk she knew she was out of time. She acted on impulse and got up from her crouching position, she tried to make a run for the door- not caring that she wouldn't know where to go.
