WINNIFRED WINTER GREW UP LOVED, LOVED AND AFRAID. Afraid of what would happen if the world found out about her, and loved by those who did know. A second child was prohibited on the Ark. It was the first child, Morgan Winter, that took care of her. When their mother died in childbirth, she took it upon herself to take care of her new sister. However, Morgan was not the only one who knew of Winnifred, there was another girl.
The girl was Faybell Mercury. She and Morgan had been friends since what felt like forever. It was common knowledge to Winnie that the girls were more than friends, they just had yet to realize it. Faybell had found the girl one day, she had no problem with it and helped to continue hiding her. Faybell was like a second sister to Winnie. They were all happy together, as a slightly unconventional family.
As for the fearful part of her life, she was both scared and mesmerized by the thought of the outside. If she were to face the reality of what her life would become, it would be nothing. She would simply be trapped under the floor for the rest of her life. However, this wasn't what worried her, it was her sister. Her sister was always working hard for her, trading rations and belongings, late shifts, and the worry and stress that came with the whole ordeal. Her sister had sacrificed everything for her, and she would never be able to repay the favor.
It wasn't until her 6th birthday that everything went downhill. Winnie had been at home waiting for Morgan and Faybell to come home, but they never did. Someone had come in their place, the guard. Since she hadn't been expecting them and wasn't given a heads up, they arrested her for the crime of being born.
As for Morgan and Faybell, they had been out trading rations for a birthday cake for Winnie. This immediately raised suspicions within the trading station, it was neither of the girls birthday so what were they up to? A guard by the name of Shumway had been onto them for some time now, when Faybell and Morgan were caught he immediately sent a group of guards to Morgan's living quarters. Both Morgan and Faybell were let off the hook seeing as they weren't Winnie's parents.
Morgan continuously beat herself up for what had happened, it was her fault that Winnie would be sentenced to death in a matter of 12 years. Faybell comforted her the best she could, but couldn't help but feel the same feeling of hopelessness and fault. Both girls schemed for any way to try and get the girls out, but to no avail. It wasn't until Morgan had over heard Doctor Abby Griffin discussing the delinquents that were being sent to earth did they have a spark of hope.
The girls hatched a plan: Faybell, being the younger of the two girls, would get arrested and then get sent to the ground with Winnie, while Morgan would find a way to get to earth from the Ark, being 18 already. Now, they only had to set the plan in action. They were going to see to it that they would see Winnie again, and not just from the other side of a glass screen.
