Tomorrow was my 19th birthday, and unlike most people who were turning this age, I wasn’t that excited. As long as I had my family and my best friend Harry with me, I wasn’t fussed. I’d known Harry since the first day he was born. I was older than him by just over 4 months, as my birthday was the end of September, whilst his was in February. Our mums had been bestfriends since Secondary school, so it was obvious we were always going to be seeing each other. Our parents always say how close we were since the first day we met. Always playing games with each other, dressing up, make pretend weddings. I guess you could say he was my first real friend - even from an early age. People find it quite odd that we’re best friends because me and Harry are completely different from one and other. He’s a crazy, outgoing, fun loving guy, where as me? I’m incredibly shy and self conscious. I find it unbelievably hard to trust people, and the only person on this earth that knows every little thing about me, is Harry. I trust him with my life and I know he trust me with his to.
Me and Harry saw each other nearly everyday, and eventually, when we were old enough to go to school we were luckily enough in all the same classes, right through to year 10. In year 11 Harry solo auditioned for the X factor and got through. He has the most beautiful, husky voice you could ever imagine. He was always singing as a kid. If a song came on the radio, Harry would be sure to sing a long. I loved listening to Harry sing, even when we were kids.
However, when it came to boot camp Harry didn’t make it through. Being his best friend I was totally gutted for him, he really did deserve it. But then there was the twist. Simon Cowell put him, and 4 other boys together, to make a band called One Direction.
They made it all the way to the final, but finished third, below Rebecca Fergeson and Matt Cardle, who ended up winning the show.
The boys were totally devistated, they had bonded so much it was as if they’d known each other since babies - like me and Harry. Once they were told the devastating news and were backstage, Harry cried his eyes out. He wanted this so much, even more than the other contenders. One of the things I love so much about Harry is he isn’t afraid to show his emotions, and I guess that’s why he cried so much that night in front of everyone.
After everything and everyone had calmed down, Simon called all 5 of them in to his office. Knowing that what Simon was about to say was either going to break their hearts more, or just maybe, give them that extra bit of hope they so desperately wanted, they sat there waiting for Simon to drop the bomb.
“Now boys. I see a lot of potential in you, and I mean a lot. Much more than many of the other contenders of this years show. And I’m not wiling to let that go to waste. Aslong as you’re willing to put as much effort and time in to this… I want to give you guys a contract”
Well you can guess… it didn’t take the boys a second to think of the answer. I was downstairs in the after party bar with Harrys mum and sister, Anne and Gemma. We were all so distraught, we wanted them to win as much as the boys did. They put everything they had in to this and to see their faces drop when their name were called was horrible.
Eventually, the boys came down, not knowing where they had been, Harry started to approach us. His mood had defiantly changed from being backstage, and from the look in his eye I just knew something good had happened.
“We got it. We got a contract!”
“Oh my god, my baby! Well done Harry, I’m so proud of you”, squealed Anne.
Gemma embraced him in a hug, congratulating him on the deal. It was my turn to congratulate my best friend.
“I’m so proud of you Harry! No one deserves this more than you and the boys! I’m so proud to call you my best friend!” I pulled him in to a hug and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
