The next morning just as the Marauders were grabbing their food, Severus came running into the hall, book over his head, and a frightened expression on his face.
Peeves was chasing him, purple flowers in his hair. Not that the Marauders knew what colour flowers they had picked, but the students that did see colour found it rather hilarious.
The four friends still laughed at the sight. Severus was yelling at Peeves to leave him alone, but not even the professors could stop Peeves from harassing the boy.
The Marauders high fived, proud of their achievement.
"Serves him right for messing with us." James spoke.
Peter was sitting next to him, smiling to himself. He considered himself very lucky to have such great friends, and he wished he'd never lose them, ever.
...that evening...
James once again was rambling on about quidditch and how he couldn't wait to join the team. Sirius started to pick up an interest for quidditch too because of James. Peter would occasionally interrupt and gush about how amazing it was to see Peeves harass Snivellus all day, and Remus had his nose stuck in a book, turning the page every now and then at a rather slow rate.
Sirius had noticed a lot of small things like that about his friends. However he noticed the most about Remus. Like how he had nervous hands. He'd always play with the hem of his jumper, or his fingernails or whatever was in reach of his fingers. Currently it was the page of his book. He rubbed the page between his fingers, grazed his thumb over the edge of the page and gently rolled the corner up, before flattening it out again.
"Remus." Sirius said without thinking. Remus glanced up. "Hm?" was all he said "Oh, uh, would you fancy trying out for quidditch next year?" Sirius forced out, regretting not having had something to say before calling his name out. "Hah. Me? Never." Remus laughed, turning his attention back to the book.
"Awh yes! I won't be left alone when you guys are at quidditch practice" Peter exclaimed. Remus grinned.
Sirius couldn't help but smile at that. "You'll still be bored. What would you guys even do without us?" James exclaimed jokingly. "Read." Remus said simply.
'Please no." Peter shot back. "We'll find something. We're gonna be perfectly fine without you guys." Remus joked, his attention with the book again.
"Remus for merlin's sake, put that book down. Let's do something all together." Sirius said after about 10 minutes of silence, clearly bored.
Remus obliged and put his book down, a mischievous smile forming on his lips. "How much do you purebloods know about muggle music?" He said. The other three just shook their heads and said "Nothing." in union.
Remus quickly hopped off his bed and pulled a record player out from under his bed. With that he pulled out a record. It had a picture of four guys with shaggy hair standing in a doorway on it and above them in red lettering it said "Hey Jude".
Remus put the black dick in the player and 'Can't buy me love' started playing. Remus bopped his head to the song, smiling and singing along.
Sirius found himself enjoying the song a lot, James and Peter liked it but nowhere near as much as Sirius and Remus.
And that's how the Marauders spent the rest of their evening.
Playing 'Hey Jude' up and down, dancing and singing along.
The next day was fairly boring. They didn't get much homework yet either, since it was their first week.
Sirius and James decided that they'd go practice some quidditch. Peter went along just to fly around the pitch but Remus didn't feel up to it much.
He decided to go to the library and do the little homework he had. Much to James' dismay, Remus ended up befriending Lily Evans. Remus knew he'd be jealous once James found out.
James, Peter and Sirius had been flying around for about two hours now, and Peter and Sirius were getting tired.
"James let's call it a day. We're tired and Remus must be bored out of his mind by now." Sirius complained. James reluctantly agreed, wanting to practice more, but not wanting to tire out his friends too much.
They packed up their things, got changed into their regular school robes and walked to the library.
They expected to see Remus sitting in a corner, nose in a book, or sleeping. But instead the three boys heard their friends' laughter echo through the library as soon as they stepped in.
The laughter was followed by a few angry shushes.
Remus had thought right. James' face was priceless when he saw Remus and Lily, the girl he hadn't stopped talking about since they were paired together in potions, laughing like they were old friends.
Sirius and Peter laughed when they saw James' face. Remus grinned and Lily just seemed genuinely confused.
After a minute or so of that Remus said bye to Lily and joined the boys, his hands shoved in his trouser pockets.
That was another thing Sirius noticed about remus. He liked to shove his hands into pockets, whether jeans, robes or hoodies it was all the same. His posture wasn't the best when he did that, slouching slightly forward. Sirius thought this looked extremely cool though.
James and Peter were playfully shoving each other, Remus silently walked besides Sirius, who was deeply lost in thought.
He had been at Hogwarts for just over a week now, and it had quite simply been the best week of his life. He was thankful for that, but he also felt like it wasn't right. Like something would go wrong any minute. Because that's how his life always worked.
Things would be good, and just as he became hopeful it all came crashing down.
He wondered what it'd be this time. Maybe his friends would get sick of him? Leave him behind, push him out of the group. Sirius didn't know which option it would be, but he knew it'd be something with the Marauders, seeing that it was the best thing in his life, and the reason for his happiness.
And good things were always temporary in Sirius' life.
Deeply lost in thought, Sirius hadn't noticed how slow he started walking.
Remus however noticed, and waited for him, softly snapping Sirius out of his thoughts as he caught up with Remus.
Remus placed a hand on Sirius' shoulder and softly spoke, "You alright?" Sirius looked up slightly. He was a bit shorter than Remus, but not much.
He forced a smile and nodded.
"I could tell that's a lie all the way from china Sirius. But it's okay, you don't have to talk about it. Just know I'm here for you if you do." Remus spoke firmly. "Now come on, let's catch up with the other idiots." He laughed this time.
Sirius' forced smile quickly turned into a real one as he ran to catch up with the others, Remus closely behind him.
"What do we say to stealing more food from the kitchens after dinner, and having a dance party after curfew?" Sirius asked, excitedly already knowing his friends would be more than excited for that idea.
