It was an unnaturally bright evening, many years in the future in a world not unlike Earth, but unlike any other, for the sky was lit with the flares of gunfire and detonating explosives. Exactly 30 minutes ago, the president of the world had announced over radio, television, and every other kind of communication available, on every channel, a single recorded message:

"The purge has begun."

This simple statement itself does not have significance, but over the past century, human populations have been skyrocketing, plummeting the world into an emergency crisis of overpopulation, famine, and drought. Thus faced with this problem, Harry Hindingham, current president of the time, declared the event known as the purge.

It was also exactly 30 minutes ago when 4 scientists, working together, escaped their homes along with 6 cats, living in their makeshift underground bunker, waiting for the purge to end. A day later, after they began experimenting on these cats, disaster struck. It was a once-in-a-many-lifetimes Level 10 earthquake. The 4 scientists were lost to the grim reaper, but in their last moment alive, sent all the cats into hypersleep, saving them. The government would continue the purge for almost 5 more years, despite their promise of a month. The cats were intended to be awoken only when a trusted scientist got the 4 scientists' secret message of help that was automated to be sent after a month, when the purge was supposed to end. Everything should go as planned.

What they didn't expect, as they watched from the skies above, was an orphaned runaway girl to reach their cats before their scientist.
