Chapter Ten

Kei was already in school, and it was way too early.

He didn't want to admit he had any cowardly side of himself, but the fact that he came this early just so he could avoid meeting her on his way to school was enough of the proof it did actually exist.

And each time someone took their turn and entered the classroom his heart skipped a beat.

So when everyone expect her gathered in the classroom, ten minutes before the class started turned to ten years.

Tsukishima really hated that anxiety and odd feeling he started feeling towards her after she arrived again. She was the person he was most comfortable with and now it became completely different.

He wondered if the real cause of that anxiety was his stubborness and determination to keep her away or the frustration of not being able to do it because he cares.

So as the time passed with the blond deep in his thoughts and flashbacks, the class has already started.

And she never showed up. 

Teacher said she confirmed she would be absent today due to family issues.

For the entire first period Yamaguchi wouldn't stop piercing him with this annoying look, probably thinking Kei said or did something to her and that's why she actually didn't show up.

Kei thought about it and she probably had reasons not to show up because of him. Maybe she couldn't face him because she was scared that he will return her present? Or maybe she was to embarrassed of it?

But that wasn't really like her. If his behavior was enough to make her feel that anxious she would change the school long before.

She was too stubborn, she wouldn't give up on him. So something else must be it.

And he realized what it was the second he took his eyes to the blackboard to avoid Yamaguchi's annoying look.

The date on the board made him uneasy the moment he looked at it and he just needed a moment to realize why.

It was her mother's birthday.

That's where she was.

Somehow relief filled his being because he actually felt a little better knowing he wasn't the cause of her absence.

But that's just a one way to look at it and the other is the fact that it would be way better if she wasn't there because she had a fight with him not because she was celebrating her mother's birthday on her mother's grave.

That only made him feel like an idiot. To even think she's that weak.

And it made Tadashi feel the same way once he told him why she was absent today.

But as much as he felt bad for Kaguya, he was actually kind of happy because Kei actually remembered what today was and he was actually willing to bring her up by himself.
It felt like he tore down some walls and that was a good progress.

The day remained peaceful and the only thing left to do was the practice he missed yesterday.

And it was a good, peaceful practice. Tsukishima didn't even mind the birthday surprise they made.
The whole Karasuno team were freaked out how happy and nice was he about it, not teasing or beating anyone that day. But the truth was, it was just a nice, normal gift which made him happy because he didn't have to survive another emotional roller coaster because of the birthday present.
