I looked up at Thorfinn beside me, him being a little bit taller than me. I had given him his equipment back and were now walking towards the lake. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Thorfinn unexpectedly attacked me, but I didn't see him as that kind of guy.
We reached the area of one of my hometown's neighbouring villages that had been empty for years already. Three dragon heads became visible, indicating that there was indeed Vikings here.
I glimpsed some of them sitting inside the boats, looking rather gloomy. The village was after all abandoned and empty of all treasures."Oh, Thorfinn! You're still alive! Gahahaha, where did you find this little kid?"
A blonde man was standing in a doorway looking rather surprised. The man was laughing, but I could sense that by the look of his eyes, he was serious."I am Des sir"
I recognized his expression. He was smart, but also greedy, probably.
I noticed Thorfinn grunt when the man spoke. Did he not like him?"Let me come with you, I can fight."
A nostalgic sensation filled my lungs. It felt like I had seen him before somewhere. The man gave me a tough look, and I held around my sword in case he refused. The tension was sharp, but then he started chuckling. The whole situation was a bit weird and uncomfortable, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was.
"Alright kid, but don't blame me when you die." He smirked while calling for the rest of the crew.
"HEEYY WE HAVE A NEW RECRUIT! Guys, this is Des, Des, meet the crew!"
I examined the rest of the team. Most of them looked like the average fighter, but there was a dark-haired guy who looked somehow better than the others. Not on the same level as their leader, but pretty close. If I had somehow started a fight with him I would be dead in minutes, I knew that. It was best to keep my distance from those two.I kept ponding, but I interrupted myself when I saw the team walking to the ships. I ran after them, eager to feel the big ship on the sea. The moment I've dreamt of for so long.
I immediately dipped my hand in the water. I could smell the salty air above, combined with the smell of fresh grass and old, creaky wood.
'Amazing'.....We started drifting along the river and it felt so very good. I thought of the cabin as I found myself accidentally looking for it; I had accidentally left my spear in the living room instead of the basement, but it didn't really matter, I wasn't going to return there anyways. The only thing I was missing already was the Grouse family. Their chickens were probably going to hatch in a few days, and I couldn't stay there to witness it.
'I'm sorry for leaving you... keep my hair as a farewell gift from me'
I chuckled from the thought of the Grouses sleeping in my hair, it was too cute.I looked around me, spotting the dark-haired guy from earlier, he was looking rather familiar. He gave me a similar feeling as what Askeladd had given me, had I seen them before somewhere?
He seemed to notice me staring at him, so he opened his mouth first:
"Hey, kid, how old are you?""uh, I'm 10..." His voice seemed so familiar.
"I'm Bjørn, welcome aboard! Des, was it?»
'He seems nice so far... maybe piracy isn't as bad as my mother told me, she did after all let her husband go every year.'
I continued chatting with Bjørn, but suddenly I was interrupted by a heavy scoff from behind me.
I turned around to see Thorfinn sitting on a bench, cleaning his dagger. It wasn't before now that I realized he seemed so distant from the other people. It seems as if he hates them all, and still, he does what they tell him to do..?
