POST WORLD WAR II EGYPT. Mara Carnahan has spent nearly a decade searching in the desert for the lost tomb of Nefertiri, daughter of Seti I and the past life of her best friend and sister-in-law Evy, and has finally located it in Saqqara, inviting Evy and Rick to join her, Jonathan, and Alex, as well as Mara and Jonathan's oldest children Sarah and Philip to uncover the secrets of Nefertiri's tomb — but it's Sarah Carnahan who finds the most nefarious things.
STUMBLING INTO A SECRET PASSAGEWAY, Sarah comes across a whole trove of burial treasure that predates Nefertiri's death by three hundred years, and with it, a series of tunnels that lead through to the hidden tomb of a king with his chest ripped open, as if someone had torn his heart, the most important organ to the ancient Egyptians, from his chest. But Sarah is far more interested in the treasure buried within the tomb than the curious pharaoh it belongs to, drawn to a particular ankh amulet that seems to hold life itself inside of it. Then she starts seeing the ghost. A shadow at first, but as her health starts to fail the line between the worlds starts to fade, as if something — someone — is trying to cross over and is using Sarah to do it.
EVEN IN DEATH, Nefertiri was tasked to protect the world from a danger that represented everything the ancient Egyptians feared — the devouring of the heart. A long-dead king that would use a child to resurrect him, to exact revenge on the creature that took the certainty of a peaceful afterlife from him. The stories still come to pass. They had believed that fighting mummies, having to save a member of their family from an awakened mummy hellbent on murder, was over thirteen years ago. But, well, with this family, it's never really over, is it?

( hello again! the mummy returns wasn't exactly ~the end~ of the story, just the end of the stuff in the movies — again, i have no plans to watch the third one so it does not exist in this fic — because we have a fourth and final act now! mostly exists because i was really into the idea of introducing jara's kids and getting the oldest — that would be sarah, aka the one mara just spent all of act three pregnant with — into the kind of trouble only a carnahan can get into, and also wattpad/tumblr dot com user babyrobins encouraged me to do it and the more i thought about it the more got added to the plot so now we have act four, secret of the tomb! as u can tell we're getting back to our roots with mummies — there are gonna be so many mummies guys i'm having so much FUN!!! anyway i'll start posting it soon, currently have about 6 chapters written but i wanna get a few more done, hope everyone enjoyed act three though!! )
( BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE — another reason why i didn't want to end this fic with act three is because there was some stuff in my head that took place immediately after the end of it, immediately after ahm-shere, and it absolutely refused to leave me alone so i wrote a one-shot about it! it'll be up on my oc tumblr valiantgentle tomorrow so if anyone was interested in reading it and/or checking out the mara edits i've made if u haven't already seen them, now u know!! )
