MARA EL-MASRI has lived in Cairo for about a year and a half now, and in her quest to become an Egyptologist, works at Cairo's Museum of Antiquities alongside clumsy librarian Evelyn Carnahan, who shares the same goals as Mara and is her closest friend in the city. It's a comfortable life, a nice one, and it's about to be disrupted in ways she could never imagine when Evelyn's brother Jonathan, a man who certainly intrigues Mara, brings her a box with map that leads to the legendary city of Hamunaptra. The city, thought by some scholars to be a myth, was said to have been lost three thousand years ago, but not anymore. With the help of the man Jonathan stole the box from, they journey to the City of the Dead.
IT'S A DANGEROUS JOURNEY — the barge they initially travel on is attacked by gunmen in black robes the first night, and when they actually reach the city, the same gunmen attack again at night, and Mara's life is spared even when she is in the sights of one of the men, and even when it would have been so easy to kill her like they seemed to have planned when they attacked. Hamunaptra holds more secrets than originally thought.
SHE EXPECTED IT TO BE A SIMPLE EXCAVATION. Evy finds the golden Book of Amun-Ra, Jonathan finds his treasure, and Mara gets a chance to prove herself as an Egyptologist to her stepfather. But when Evy reads from the Book of the Dead and accidentally brings a three-thousand year old mummy back to life, things get so much more complicated than Mara prepared for — including in her own family.
