MARA EL-MASRI'S FASCINATION with the long-ago world of ancient Egypt started with the stories her stepfather would tell her when she was a child. He would tell her how the sun god Ra created life itself. How your heart would be weighed against Ma'at's feather in the Hall of Two Truths in the afterlife and if the heart is as light as the feather, you would be granted passage to Aaru for eternal life, but if the heart is heavier, the heart will be given to the devourer Ammit. He would tell her these stories and so many more with such conviction that it led to a lifelong love for Egypt (and perhaps a few nightmares starring the soul devourer herself, but that was neither here nor there).
HER BROTHER TALIB EL-MASRI is missing, left after their mother's funeral two years ago and hasn't been heard from since. He left a vague note telling them not to look for him, and that is the last she heard from him. There is nothing for Mara to do but wonder what happened and pray that wherever he is he's safe from harm. There is no explanation for why he left and why he didn't give a proper goodbye. Where was her brother now, and will she ever see him again?
HER STEPFATHER JAMIL EL-MASRI has kept secrets from his family for as long as she can remember, and Mara has never been able to figure them out. He visits Cairo every six months and never tells anyone what he does there, who he speaks to or where he goes. Even when Mara moves from London to Cairo in her pursuit of a career in Egyptology, he doesn't tell her. He hopes she will understand one day, and yet he still hopes she will never find out, because she would never forgive him if she does.
THE YEAR IS 1926, and all three of these things are about to collide. The secrets of the El-Masri family are moments away from being revealed when the key is presented. The Book of the Dead is about to be read from, and the dead are going to rise.

( hello and welcome to the breezes whisper!! the idea wouldn't leave me alone so i wrote it and i love it and i'm so excited to finally post it!!! i'm really loving this story so far, it's the most excited i've been about writing in a while, and mara's character is one of my faves and i hope everyone else will feel the same. )
