Beth’s P.O.V.
I sat down by myself in the cafeteria. Mia had detention for skipping class, again. I honestly don’t know how her brothers never see this side of her.
I was now bored so I tried distracting myself.
I glanced around the room and watched the different cliques all talk amongst each other. I studied their body language and how they moved, I know it sounds creepy, but it really shows a person.
Over at the popular table, the girls were always so confident and all over the boys. Their fingers would lightly graze the guy’s biceps, although they barely notice their existence. The girls only come to life in the bedroom, well, that’s when all girls come to life. Because we’re whores.
My eyes stretched over to where the ‘art freaks’ sit. They’re all chilled out and mellow, but whenever a ‘popular’ would walk past, they’d stiffen. They were scared, but they need to remember its just high school. The ‘popular’ kids are just kids. I remember a certain quote I saw online and it helped me realize people aren’t at all threatening, it said:
‘Don’t be intimidated, everybody came out of a vagina screaming in fear at one point in their life.’
Since then, people don’t really seem to faze me.
“Bethany!” Ben teased as he and James sat across from me. Okay, Ben was a different story. He’s was a twin, his mother had a C-section, so he’s different. “Where’s Mia?”
“Helping one of the teachers for extra credit,” I lied while taking a bite of my egg sandwich. This is the greatest thing my tastebuds have ever come across. It’s like I’m flying in water.
“Enjoying that sandwich?” James asked as I unconsciously let out a moan. My eyes widened and I covered my mouth, “I’ll take that as a yes.”
Avoiding the awkward moment, I quickly chewed the rest of my sandwich and took a swig of my water, washing down the rest of the bread. I put my bottle down and wiped my mouth with the back of my sweater—I could feel Ben staring at me. I looked up and my eyes locked with his, “What?” I asked as he gave me a smirk.
“You’re just so beautiful when you swallow.”
If my checks weren’t red before, then they definitely were now.
He and James burst into laughter seconds later and I smacked his arm.
“Ben!” a girl yelled. But it wasn’t just any girl. “Ben!”
No.
“Crap…” he muttered.
“Benny!”
He looked up and cringed slightly, “Crystal…” he said as she ran over and hugged him.
“Time to go,” I muttered quickly while standing. I jogged out of that room as soon as I could. That girl has done nothing but give me hell and I wasn’t going to sit there and watch her throw herself all over Ben, or anyone for instance.
I checked the time, I only had one class left and that was health.
Eh, I don’t need to go. I’m healthy enough.
I quickly checked to see if the coast was clear and walked to the front of the school.
I was a very low key person, it’s harder for Mia. Everybody knows her as Ben and Daniel’s little sister. People just know me as ‘the friend’. No one really wants to get to know me, but that’s a good thing, I prefer it that way. I’ve got Mia, and that’s honestly the only person I need.
I exited the front gates while pulling out my phone so I could text Mia and let her know I was leaving school early. We had plans tonight, there was a club opening down the road and we wanted to check it out. We try to avoid going to parties in the local area because gossip gets around fast, but we weren’t going to miss this opening!
Security will be tight tonight though so no one from our school will be able to get in. Thank god for fake ID’s.
After I passed a couple more blocks, I was home. I pressed my ear against the door and listened in… I heard nothing. I always had to check in case mum was… busy in the lounge room.
I bent down and grabbed the spare key from under the pot plant and unlocked the door. I walked inside and the house was a mess as usual. I stepped over all my mother’s clothes and quickly ran upstairs into my room, closing the door behind me. I went into my cupboard and searched through my clothes… but most of them were gone.
I sighed and massaged my temples. She took my clothes again.
Luckily, I hide the good stuff underneath my bed. I walked over and lifted my mattress. My eyes came in contact with my little black cocktail dress—it wasn’t my preferred choice, but it would have to do for tonight.
I slipped it into my backpack as I heard the front door open and close. I waited a few more moments until I heard giggling and my mother’s bedroom door close. Sighing, I packed everything else I’d need for tonight and headed out the door.
I now have four hours to kill.
