Chapter 3
The air outside was strange. It seemed thick, and it was a little foggy. Everything seemed so grey and dull. I kept walking until I found myself under the soft glow of the street light.
That's strange. I pulled my phone out of my bag.
8:34 am.
Why is it so dark then?
I continued walking, but soon, I found myself taking long, slow breaths. The air just seemed thick, almost toxic. It got tough to even breath. It was the strangest thing.
But, even stranger, no one was around. Everyday at this time, the streets were busy with people going to work, kids going to school, but today, nothing. Not a soul in sight.
Could the apocalypse really be happening? No.... it can't be! That was crazy! ......Right?' I shook that thought out of my head. It's just a coincidence.I told myself. It's impossible.
Soon I arrived at the school doors. Pushing open the door I walked inside.
I headed for my locker located on the second floor. I walked down the wide hallways then up the dim staircase. There were only a few people here too. It wasn't the normal crowded, smelly, hallways. There was a max of I think ten kids in the hallway at a time. Either parents were pulling their kids out of school because of the “apocalypse” or maybe a lot of them were injured yesterday like me.
I got to my locker. Just in time to see Hailey Thomas open her locker right next to mine.
Saying Hailey was my best friend was bit of an overstatement. We weren't good enough friends to share all our secrets or have a sleepover every weekend or anything, but she was like me, with not many friends.
"Hey" I greeted, snapping open my cold metal lock.
"Hey what's up?" She asked, pulling books out of her locker.
"Not much, but can you believe all of this apocalypse stuff!"
"I know! Some parents pulled their kids out of school because it's 'unsafe' but really, one little earthquake and now the whole world is in panic! Seems like a bit of a stretch.
"Tell me about it!' I mused.
"So Pea got pulled out too" Hailey informed me, referring to the third musketeer in our group
"Really? She's falling for all of this stuff?"
"Yep. I called her this morning and she said ‘the day of doom is upon us,’ or something equally stupid, so she convinced her mom to let her stay home"
"Wow."
"I know," Hailey continued, "Lame, right?"
"Yeah..." I trailed. She slammed her rusty locked shut and gave me a stern look.
"You're not falling for this crap are you?!" She asked, annoyed.
"What? Pfft, No! It's so stupid." I moved some of my hair from my face and looked back towards my locker, trying not to make eye contact. Hailey just shrugged her shoulders.
"Whatever. Let's just get to class."

I sighed as I set my red lunch tray on a table outside. I was late getting out of science, so when I finally reached the cafeteria, the normal poutine I get was sold out. Instead, all I could get was an apple, a small carton of milk, and banana. I feel healthy. Yay, I guess...
It almost seemed to have gotten darker since this morning. The atmosphere had an eerie vibe to it. I found myself looking over my shoulder a few times thinking “This is the part of the horror movie where someone comes and kills everyone”. The thought made me smile with amusement as the wind whipped my hair around. It gave me a shiver and I strained my eyes trying to look for Hailey in the fog but had no success. I turned back to my food and began peeling off the skin of my banana when the wind picked up even more.
What the heck? It was loud, blowing in my ears and whirrling my hair all around my face. As I tried to push my hair away from my eyes, the ground began to shake. My lunch tray trembled on the table as the salt and pepper shakers fell over, spilling its contents. I could hear my classmates start to yell and scream stupid sayings involving the apocalypse. I looked around at all the chaos that just broke out. People were running, a few were screaming and they wouldn’t stop saying it was the apocalypse.
I stood up then turned to the general direction of the voices.
"It's NOT the stupid apocoly--"
"WATCH OUT!" I was cut off by someone yelling and then tackling me to the ground. Just as we dove into the ground, I heard the crash of something hitting the table of where I previously was. When I looked up I realized... It was him. The boy! He... saved me..
