Chapter 2
When my eyes fluttered open everything was hazy. My throat was sticky and dry and my head was throbbing. It took me a moment to realize I was lying on my soft bed in my room. I could barely make out the image of my mom sitting on my desk chair, looming over me. When my vision cleared up some more I could see she was wreck. Red face, trails of tears streaking down her face, leaving them dampened, her hair, in a big messy pile on her head.
“M-Mom?” I stuttered weakly, finding it hard to speak.
"Yes sweetie." She smiled sadly. " Oh baby girl are you alright?"
I hate the name baby girl. I would have rolled my eyes but I knew it would make my head hurt even more than it already does. "I'm fine." I replied. I sat up, realizing there was some kind of bandage wrapped around my head. "What happened?"
"I should be asking you the same thing. I got home and you were passed out on the pavement in a puddle of blood! I tried calling the ER but I could get through and-"
Suddenly, my memory came flooding back. My project, the rumbling sound, hitting my head, the blood. "There was a-an earthquake..." I stammered, interrupting her frantic rant.
"Yes. The news said it was just a mild quake. Nothing bad. Everyone is starting up the apocalypse business again."
This time, I actually rolled my eyes, even though it hurt. Reluctantly throwing my warm blue comforter off of my legs, I stood up and headed for the door.
"Where are you going?" Mom asked curiously, raising an eyebrow..
"To finish my essay. " I replied over my shoulder. I walked down the creaky hall, found my bag and got back to work.
When I came back to my room, my mother was gone. I sat on the bed with my legs sprawled out in front of me. I spread my papers across my bed while typing on my old, bulky, laptop. that was extremely slow. When I finally finished, I glanced beside me at my alarm clock to check the time. It’s bright red numbers read 12:24am, meaning I was losing sleep. I shut my laptop closed and organized all of my papers until the bed was clear. When it was, I set my bag by the bedroom door, turned out the dim lights then crawled into the covers, falling asleep instantly.
Soon I woke up to the annoying ring of my alarm clock. It's loud buzzing made my head feel a million times worse. I slammed my hand down on it to shut off, then sat up, rubbing the sleep from from my eyes. After just a brief second, my mom came through the door.
She turned on the light, making me flinch at it’s brightness, before I looked up at her. "Good morning Vivianne!" She greeted in an annoyingly cheery tone.
"Mornin'" I slurred lazily. I stretched and yawned before replying. "So, what brings you to my humble abode?" I asked sarcastically. I was usually a morning person, but the terrible pounding of my head counteracted that.
"I just wanted to see if you wanted to go to school today, because in the shape you're in I wouldn't want to."
I really thought about it. If I stayed home I could just watch cartoons and eat cookie dough ice-cream while staying in my cozy pajamas all day, but I would have to catch up on anything I missed at school.
I also thought about that guy, if I just stayed home I wouldn't see him. I thought back to his glorious eyes and found myself in a trance just thinking about it.
I was repeatedly mentally slapping myself. This was getting a little ridiculous, however the thought of him already won me over.
I snapped out of my internal debate and replied to my mom, "I'll go." My mom smiled then left the room. I stood barefooted on the cold hardwood floors, stretching, yet again, before I went through the daily routine.
I stepped into my tiny 70’s bathroom and turned on the shower, letting the soothing hot water engulf me. I washed away the dried blood from my hair but shampooed lightly as it stung the spot where my head had been bleeding.
When I reluctantly turned off the water, I stepped into my room and searched for the most comfortable clothing I had, not caring on the style, or coordination. I let my hair flow down my back, then picked up my heavy bag sitting ready at the door. I grabbed some money off of the counter for my lunch then yelled a quick goodbye before beginning my walk to school.
