Chapter 1

The rumors were spreading like wildfire at Cedarwood High. Some people could hardly stay seated in the dingy school desks. There was just one week left until the date of another one of Nostradamus' apocalypse theories. I, Vivianne Hart, knew it was all just a hoax, but it seemed that some were more easily convinced then I was. I saw a girl shaking from fear as another boy and girl teased her about all the tragedies that were supposed to come. I rolled my eyes and turned back to my book. In a minute I saw the teacher, Mr. McKnight, enter the room.

"Good Morning class!" He greeted cheerfully as he walked along the front of the room to his desk. The class replied in a slow, moaning chorus, "Good morning Mr. McKnight."

"Glad to hear we’re all up and ready!" Mr. McKnight joked while shuffling through papers on his desk. He stepped out from behind his large wooden desk and made his way to the middle of the classroom. "Alright class, I know everyone is talking about the apocalypse that's coming," Mr. McKnight explained, with air quotes. "So, that is your new English project." The class groaned as he started writing expectations on the dusty blackboard. I pulled out a fresh sheet of lined paper from my bright yellow two inch binder, and started taking down notes. By the time I finished, it seemed most people were only half done. Even in an academic class I still manage to stay on top. I smiled and being too lazy to start the report, I picked up my book and continued reading.

Before I knew it, the agitating school bell rang, signaling the end of the period. I grabbed my books, holding them tight against my chest and started exiting the small door with the rest of the class, all of them mumbling to each other.

"Don't forget!" Mr. McKnight shouted after the class. I turned to see him with his feet up on the desk and an apple in his hand, half eaten. "The report is due Friday!" He took another bite of the apple before picking up a sheet of paper from his desk and reading it thoroughly. I turned back towards the open classroom door and kept walking, making my way to my period two class. Phys Ed. We learned a bit of First Aid in the first half and then did strength training in the next half.

"C'mon girls! Hustle!" Our gym coach shouted, "You'll need this if the apocalypse does come!"

All of my classes were like that. Students gossiping, teachers ‘preparing us for the end’ and now, I have four apocalypse projects! I was thankful it was only Monday so if I did one project per night I could get them all done by Friday.

But as the day continued there was one question that continuously provoked my mind.

Why is everyone making a big deal over this fake apocalypse?

When finally the bell for last period rang, I quickly packed up my books at my locker.  As I was walking home from school, I was looking up at the sky and began laughing to myself. The sky was bright blue and sunny. It was a warm day. The wind was giving off a small breeze to keep you from getting too hot. Overall, it was a nice day. You'd think it would be more cloudy with an "impending apocalypse". I laughed again, shaking my head and continued walking. I've walked the same route for all of elementary school, and because Cedarwood High was right next door, I still take the same route. It became some sort of a habit.

I continued walking. The air felt light as I stepped on the old grey sidewalk, but before I knew it, my face was slammed against the ground. I tripped on some stupid rock and lifted my head to see a stranger looking down on me. He wasn't the picture-perfect model type guy but he definitely had some good qualities about him, where as I looked ridiculous lying there on the ground. I sighed in defeat and let my head drop, my dark blonde hair falling in front of my face.

"Are you okay?" He asked. His voice sounded genuinely concerned. It sounds bad, but I was a little shocked.

"Yeah, I'm fine" I replied. "It happens all the time, I’m a bit of a klutz..." I explained trying to sit up. Before I was able to, he bent down and held out his hand to me. I didn't want to be rude so I grabbed it. He helped me up, surprising me once again. He was stronger than I would have guessed.

“Thanks.” I nonchalantly responded. I brushed the dirt off of my pants, then looked up and instantly became lost.

It was his eyes. A brilliant midnight blue sea filled with emotions. I was just a small fish swimming amongst the wonders. I felt relaxed, yet for a minute, my heart stopped. I couldn’t speak, I felt magical, beautiful, enchanted. He could have said anything and I would have believed it. It was just so surreal, with no words good enough to explain.

He cleared his throat and looked at me expectantly. I blinked a few times, my mind going completely blank. Digging my nails into my palms, I had to use a lot of strength to tear my eyes away from his, the source of my daze. When I finally did, I came to my senses and realized I was staring at some random guy in the middle of the street. I looked to the ground and shook my head, then without a word, turned and kept walking.

The rest of the way home, I couldn’t think of anything except for him. I continued mentally slapping myself.

What happened was just a small encounter on the streets. It meant nothing.

I was probably never going to see him again.

He'll avoid me after I stood there staring at him for a good two minutes.

I muttered this to myself under my breath as I walked at a fast pace. I had to forget about it. ‘He’ has probably already forgotten. Why shouldn’t I? I’m wasting my time just thinking about it.

But his eyes... his beautiful, glorious, deep, mesmerizing--

This time I actually slapped myself. That last thought was a little too far. I sound like a lovesick puppy from those stupid romance movies I make fun of.

Finally I reached the brick tiled steps of my front porch. I turned the cold brass knob on the door and pushed on the door to discover it was locked as usual. I dug my hand through my small vintage bag only to discover my key. wasn’t there. Looking through the glass panel on my door, I found them sitting right there on the table beside the door. I sighed and let my heavy bag fall off of my back and plop on the ground. I decided to climb the fence to the backyard, as the back is sometimes left unlocked, but with the luck I have, this was not one of those times. I tried all the windows too with no success. I climbed back to the front and looked through the glass panel at the clock. It read 3:15, telling me my mother won’t be home for another rough hour and half.

Groaning, I decided to make use of my time and do my homework. Pulling my binder out of my bag I spread them out on the porch steps, using nearby rocks to hold them down. I had just started writing my English apocalypse essay when I felt a tremor. It was almost so small I didn’t notice. Shrugging it off, I got back to work.

I felt another tremor, but it was stronger, followed by a rumbling noise. I tried to find where the sound was comming from, listening motionless. The ground?

Nah, can’t be...

The tremors began to pick up force. I stood up on the steps and tried to gather my things into my bag.  I tried to do it as quickly as possible, and ended up shoving in  a few rocks in my haste. By now the tremors were unbearably strong. I gained my balance on the steps then stepped up to the door banging on it with the side of my fist, yelling, “Open the door!” as if anyone were home. Knocking more harshly now, I lost my balance and fell down the porch steps. I landed on the ground and heard a rather unpleasant cracking noise as my head made contact with the brick tiles. I sat up as best as I could and lifted a hand to my head where the pain was the worst. When I let it drop, my hand felt, wet. I looked at it, and realized it was soaked with blood. I tried to apply pressure to it but before I knew it, my vision blurred then faded to black entirely.
