Morning met without daylight to coat their faces. Smiles of gratitude from the introverted sun unraveled in their eyes, with both waking up around the same time.
"What're you so happy about?" She asked, seeing him stretching on the bed, standing without courtesy.
"Today's the day we test the ladder!" He smiled, his inkling teeth flaunting their asymmetrical sharpness. He flexed and jumped off the bed, giving himself enough momentum to land on the floor. It looked like it would hurt, and it certainly would, if Iza didn't teach him the ink trick beforehand.
Blue ink splattered on the sheets, and even on Iza. And unlike last night, there was no apology. He was too busy striding along the way to the ladder to even look behind him.
"I wonder if..." She wondered if she could turn blue like him. She backed down once she realized what that would imply. One quick turn is all it would take, and his pride would surely tell him she was a fan. She waited for it to dry and stood up, heading for the waterfall.
"I promise, I'll find a way out." He hadn't promised things before, and making this should hold him accountable for any procrastination that may come his way. He couldn't stand to be in one place for too long, and waiting would just further agitate him.
"Great, do it by noon."
He looked up, awaiting to find some way to track the time, but as far as he could see there was nothing. She giggled, and uncinched her dress.
"Whoa! Hey, no! What are you doing!" His face now bright red, hiding under his shirt. "What the shell, Iza?!"
"Relax," She couldn't help but be amused. This squid was so frightened, yet had no reason to be.
"I have to clean."
"Clean?!" His voice a pierce in the quiet. "Clean what?!"
"Myself." She admitted, the dress dropping by her feet. And before he could look in horror, curiosity or perhaps both, she was already submerged in the water by the time he pulled down the neck of his sweater.
Her pink head popped out from the water, it was a lot deeper than it looked. Steam rose and warmth coated her skin. It felt too good to get out, so her patience made sense at least to her.
"You know, you really have to warn me."
"About...?" Oh, it was too good to torment him.
"You know what about! Don't fucking act dumb!"
She sighed, letting the water swallow her once more before reaching the surface. This was a good method, she thought. One dip in was enough for her to recharge her batteries from his moans and shrieks.
"I'm a guy."
"Thanks." She splashed him, which just made him even more pissed. She knew he didn't know she overheard him last night, and now that he had a fondness for her, albeit small, she knew there were more things she could get away with now. And so she could roughhouse him and toy with his silly little boy brain, like she did to Marcus in the Sector when they were but small octolings. "You know, if you didn't mention it, I wouldn't have figured it out."
He rolled his eyes, looking for the ladder and clenched his jaw. "I don't know why you're so smug, but you can drop the act. Because if you catch me looking at your octo tits by accident, I'm not gonna sit here and be yelled at!"
"Relax, blue boy." She swam over him, like a mermaid menace, fearless, her eyebrows drawn. "The only one who yells is you. Ever."
"Yeah, right." He scoffed. What a load of bull. She had yelled at LEAST as much as fifty percent this whole trip, he'd like to think. "Well, I don't care. Get naked, fine, just don't get mad if I look."
