This one takes place sometime during Trials And Tribulations while Edgeworth is still travelling.
Established relationship.

"I miss you," Phoenix whispered into the phone. It was late and the walls of his apartment were thin. He didn't want to disturb the neighbors.

Miles had been travelling for, quite frankly, way too long. But it was what he had to do. He hadn't just been studying law in different countries, he'd also been healing. Healing from everything that had happened.
And Phoenix knew that.

"I miss you too," Miles replied.
"On the news today... they said something about an earthquake. Is everyone alright?" He sounded concerned.

Phoenix rubbed his eye.
"Earthquake? Oh, yeah... yeah, 's fine, it was a small one. I think I was in my car when it happened, didn't even feel it," he reassured Miles.

Miles hummed.
"Good, that's... good." He seemed relieved.
"I... I guess I forgot that not everyone reacts to those the way I do," he sighed.

"Oh, Miles," Phoenix replied. He sighed and flopped onto his back.
"I wish I could hug you right now. Stupid distance," he mumbled.

Miles chuckled woefully.
"Phoenix," he sighed, "you know I-"

"I know," Phoenix said. "I know, it's just... sometimes it's like..." He swallowed.
"Like I can't be there for you... because you're not really in my life anymore. And I'm not in yours. Like... you won't be coming back anytime soon. Not for me, not for anyone..." His voice broke off.
Tears pricked in his eyes. This time, he didn't try to hold them back. They rolled across his face and fell onto the pillow, hot and bitter.

"Phoenix," Miles started. But he knew there was nothing he could say. He knew Phoenix was right. It was almost like they were strangers again, like they'd forgotten all the little things that had made them fall in love with each other.
But... he couldn't go home. Not yet. He still needed time.

"Miles," Phoenix sniffled. He dried his eyes and stared at the ceiling.
"When you come back... I'll be here."

"I know," Miles replied. "Thank you. You know I love you, right?"

Phoenix smiled.
"Yeah, I know. I love you too."
He thought for a second.
"If the world was ending, you'd come home early, right?", he joked.

"Phoenix," Miles said seriously. "It won't take an apocalypse for me to come back home. Don't worry."
