"Mystic Maya," Pearl started, shoving another french fry into her mouth. Maya had taken her little cousin out for lunch. Pearl's eyes had that look again.
"Is Mr. Nick being a good special someone to you?""Pearly! Not this again," Maya protested. "Alright, listen. He's not my special someone."
Pearl's eyes widened. "But, I thought..." Tears started to fill her eyes.
"Did he break up with you?" She pushed up her sleeves, looking ready to punch someone.Maya laughed and shook her head. "No, Pearly. We were never together. He's like a big brother to me. Now that I think of it, dating him would be really weird. Yuck." She pulled a face.
"We never denied it because you were always so happy for us and we didn't want to spoil it for you. But... it was time to tell you." Maya took a big bite out of her burger.Pearl thought for a second. "Then maybe we should find a special someone for Mr. Nick... I mean, you can take care of yourself, but... Mr. Nick seems kind of lost sometimes..."
An idea popped into Maya's head.
Oh no, she thought. Bad idea. But then again, if it works...
"Nick likes Edgeworth," she blurted."I mean, he's never told me... but the way he looks at him, the way he talks about him - and he never shuts up about that guy - there's got to be something there!!"Pearl's eyes widened again.
"Really?" She was grinning from one ear to the other.
"They would be sooo cute together! They could be grumpy old men... together," she giggled."They really are grumpy old men," Maya agreed.
"Alright, but how do we do it?""Do what?", Pearl asked.
"How do we get them together? Do we even know if Edgeworth likes Nick?"
Maya sighed. But what if...
"We could talk to Edgeworth! ...wait, he's not going to have time for us... unless...!""What is it?" Peal clapped her little hands together in excitement.
Maya beamed. "A slumber party!!"
It was a stupid idea, but somehow it worked. Over the past few months, Edgeworth had more or less become an integral part of their friend group. He was really trying to open up more. So inviting him to a slumber party with Maya, Pearl and Phoenix wasn't too weird.
It was going to be a movie night. At Phoenix's apartment, of course. At least, Edgeworth had volunteered to provide snacks and drinks. Otherwise, Phoenix would have been the one to pay for everything yet again.
They had decided on a Disney movie, and Edgeworth was bringing popcorn, chips, soda... and wine, 'for the grown-ups' as he'd said.
Maya and Pearl brought... well, their blankets and pillows. And a plan. When Maya and Pearl arrived, Edgeworth was already there.
"Good evening, ladies," he greeted them when he opened the door."Hey, Nick, why is Edgeworth already here?" Maya wiggled her eyebrows as hard as she could.
As she'd expected, Phoenix blushed immediately. "I, uh, he was helping me set everything up. And he made the popcorn so you hungry ladies didn't have to wait."
Smooth change of topic, thought Maya, grabbing a handful of popcorn and shoving it into her mouth.
Then she grabbed Edgeworth by his sleeve and pulled him aside. "So, what are you doing here so early?" Again, she used her eyebrows to get her point across. Pearl was just standing next to her, fluttering her eyelashes, hoping it would help somehow.Edgeworth, too, blushed slightly. He looked away. "I was helping Phoenix set everything up. And I made popcorn! Do you like it?"
Again, change of topic, Maya thought. Very suspicious. And he called him 'Phoenix', not 'Wright'.
"Miles!!", Phoenix called out from the kitchen. "Where's the corkscrew? I want to open the wine you brought!"
'Miles', huh?
As soon as everything had been set up, they all squeezed onto Phoenix's little sofa. Edgeworth on one end, then Phoenix, then Pearl (she'd insisted on sitting between Phoenix and Maya) and then Maya on the other end.
They're sitting suspiciously close, Maya thought. I mean, it's a small sofa, but still...
When they all reached for the blankets that were piled up on the floor, Maya made sure to leave only one blanket for Phoenix and Edgeworth.
"Hm, I guess you guys will have to share."
Neither of them protested, blushing slightly as they huddled under the blanket. She barely paid attention to the movie, trying to think of a way to make them reveal their feelings for each other.
Pearl pointed at the screen, where the protagonist and her love interest were working very hard at pretending not to be interested in each other.
"They're just like Mr. Nick and Mr. Edgeworth! Look! They say they don't like each other... but they do!" She sighed.Phoenix giggled until he got jabbed in the ribs by Edgeworth, who couldn't contain a grin himself. Phoenix hid his face in the blanket.
Look at them, Maya thought. So oblivious. They need to find out about each other's feelings!
"Hey," Phoenix chuckled, "we really did hate each other at one point. Well, kinda. But that's in the past."
Maya had had enough.
"Nick, I know you have a crush on Edgeworth. Go on and tell him, I'm pretty sure he feels the same way."
She crossed her arms, waiting.Phoenix giggled again. "Ok, sure."
He turned to Edgeworth, putting his hands on his shoulders. "Edgeworth..." Phoenix could barely contain his laughter. "I... I have a crush on you."Edgeworth was trying very hard to keep a straight face, but he failed miserably. His voice shook as he tried to control his laughter. "Wright... I have a crush on you too." He snorted and pulled Phoenix in for a kiss. A very long kiss.
Maya covered Pearl's eyes. "Eww, I get it, you can stop now! You could've just told me... I mean, I'm happy for you guys, but please get a room!"
Phoenix smirked.
"Don't worry, we will. Why do you think there are only two mattresses on the floor? One for you, one for Pearls. Or are you telling me you didn't notice?"Maya threw a pillow at him.
"Damnit," she mumbled, "I knew I missed something."
