<Phoenix POV>
Phoenix sighed and stared into his empty glass that had once contained cheap red wine.
He wasn't a fan of parties. He had only agreed to going to this one because it was detective Gumshoe's birthday party and Trucy had insisted on performing a magic show at the party as her present for the detective.The venue was small, but crowded enough for him to lose sight of Apollo, who was probably off talking to Klavier somewhere. So here he was, staring at his feet through an empty wine glass.
Earlier, he thought he'd seen a flash of a dark berry-colored suit pushing through the crowd, but he'd lost sight of that as well."Hey." A warm, friendly voice pulled him out of his thoughts. He looked up.
The man before him was tall, put-together and rather attractive. He seemed to be about Phoenix's age and gave off strong cop vibes. Probably one of Gumshoe's colleagues.Phoenix gave him a warm smile. "Hey", he replied. "What's up?"
"Nice spikes." The man pointed at Phoenix's hair. Only now did Phoenix realize the guy was swaying slightly gave off a faint smell of wine.
"Thanks," Phoenix replied, "takes a lot of hair gel to get them this... spiky."
Without missing a beat, the cop reached out and poked Phoenix's hair.
Normally, Phoenix would have been taken aback, but tonight, he just didn't care. Besides, there were some things he wanted to get his mind off of. Maybe a nameless stranger at this party would be exactly what he needed in order to forget the fact that he was hopelessly in love with his friend and rival. Or maybe they could do it in the bathroom and he could close his eyes and pretend it was Miles.
So when the stranger inched closer and closer, Phoenix didn't pull back.
<Miles POV>
Miles was enjoying Trucy's magic show and avoiding annoying people, so everything was good. Except it wasn't. He hadn't seen Phoenix all night, even though he knew he'd be here to support his daughter. Sure, Phoenix wasn't exactly a party animal, but for Trucy, he'd even become a balloon animal if he had to.
So where was he?Phoenix was one of the reasons why Miles had actually accepted the invitation in the first place. Not really a party animal himself, he'd been reluctant to say yes. But when Gumshoe had mentioned Trucy would be performing, Miles' hopes of seeing Phoenix there had made him consider it. And Trucy's magic show, of course.
Miles and Phoenix hadn't hung out in a few weeks, but the last time, there'd been some... weird tension. Their hands had brushed in a seemingly innocent way and Phoenix had acted weirdly for the rest of the night.
To be honest, Miles hadn't been any more subtle himself.He could feel all the unspoken thoughts pile up inside of his chest, filling it up until he couldn't breathe and it felt like it was going to burst.
So what now? Talk it out? Scary, scary thought. But probably actually a good idea. If only he could find Phoenix.As entertaining as the magic show was, he hadn't been paying attention for a while now, his thoughts always wandering back to Phoenix. So he turned around and made his way through the crowd, trying to find him.
He's probably as far away from the center of attention as possible, Miles thought.
And as he pushed past perplexed policemen and prosecutors who were watching Trucy with wide eyes, he spotted Phoenix leaning against a wall, fiddling with an empty glass.But before he could reach him, a tall, rather handsome man blocked his way, striking up a conversation with Phoenix.
Phoenix's warm smile made something inside Miles twist painfully.
The feeling got worse when the guy started touching Phoenix's hair.Miles didn't know what was going on, he just knew that he was going over there. Now.
<Phoenix POV>
Out of the corner of his eye, Phoenix could see Miles break through the crowd and made a beeline towards them.
The tipsy cop was currently whispering some pretty exciting things into Phoenix's ear, his hand resting on his shoulder. But before Phoenix could warn him, the guy was violently ripped backwards by a strong hand on his shoulder.
"Deputy," Miles hissed. "I hardly think your behavior is appropriate for a party where minors are present, hm?" He pointed towards the stage where Trucy was currently performing and gave the cop a polite smile. His eyes were ice cold.
"M-Mr. Edgeworth, s-sir," the guy stuttered. "I apologize. " He looked like he was going to shit his pants. Phoenix felt kind of bad for him.
Miles nodded. "Now, if you'll excuse us..."
He let go of the poor guy (even though he looked like he would rather have punched him) and put a very tense hand on Phoenix's back.
"Let's get some fresh air."Phoenix had no idea why they were going outside, but Miles looked a little scary right now and he really didn't want to resist.
Besides, it was kinda hot.Miles' hand burned like fire between Phoenix's shoulderblades, but when they got outside and Miles took his hand off his back, Phoenix shivered.
A loud noise startled him. It took him a few seconds to realize that Miles had punched a trashcan.
"That slimy bastard," Miles growled, flexing his hand.
"Whoa, Miles," Phoenix said, holding his arms out. "It's fine. He wasn't bothering m-"
"But he could have," Miles interrupted him. He slowly regained his composure.
"Did he say something?" He stared at the floor, still furious but hiding it well.Phoenix was confused. "Wh- say something? Like what?"
Miles placed his hands on Phoenix's shoulders and pushed gently. Phoenix's back hit the wall.
"I'm asking if he was flirting with you.""Uh, he complimented my hair, I guess..." Phoenix replied. Best not to repeat all the other things he'd said.
"I saw him touch it," Miles said. "Did he even ask for permission?"
Phoenix frowned. "Why do you care? Like I said, he wasn't bothering me. I don't expect you to get it, but I was quite enjoying the attention."
He could feel Miles' fingers digging into his jacket. "You were enjoying it, huh?" Miles was now glaring at him.
"I can't believe you..." he growled, his gaze flicking to Phoenix's slightly parted lips.The air was knocked out of Phoenix's chest when Miles crashed into him, bruising his lips in a hungry kiss.
It only took Phoenix a moment to realize what was happening. He instinctively buried his hands in Miles' hair, tilted his head and opened his mouth as he deepened the kiss.
Now was not the time to be surprised. He didn't care why this was happening, he just knew he didn't want to waste a second of it.Miles ran the tips of his fingers along Phoenix's jawline, drawing a small moan from his throat. Phoenix could feel himself getting more and more aroused.
He gently pulled on Miles' lower lip with his teeth, earning a sweet sound that was like music to his ears. With their bodies pressed so closely together, he could tell Miles was as excited as he was.
Panting heavily, they pulled apart to catch their breaths.Miles' eyes were dark and stormy and filled with lust. "What a fool he was to think he was worthy of you."
Phoenix chuckled. "Fool? You sound like Franziska." Then the rest of the sentence hit him. "Wait, what do you mean, 'worthy'?" He couldn't help but smirk.
Miles looked away, crossing his arms. "I mean... you deserve someone... who appreciates you. Not some stranger at a party who touches your hair without asking."
Finally, it dawned on Phoenix.
"You were jealous, weren't you, Miles?"Miles frowned. "Bullshit," he said, before going in for another kiss.
