"Oh come on!"
You threw your bucket of water on the ground as you looked at the dying leaves of your potato plants. The plants that you had been trying to grow for the last two weeks. Keyword: Trying.
You'd managed to fit in quite well with the other Gladers, and no one really seemed to notice that you were the only girl anymore. Your hip had healed well and all that was left was a faint scar. You got along quite well with Minho, Newt and Alby. Gally still got on your nerves though. You two seemed to do everything you could to peeve the other off. Most of the Gladers tried to stay on his good side, but not you! Sometimes Minho tried to tell you the reason you hated Gally so much was because the two of you were so similar. You refused to believe that, however.
You didn't really like being a Track-hoe, and if you were being perfectly honest being a Builder looked much more appealing. You would ask to change but that would mean being stuck with Gally. And that wouldn't be good for anyone. The thing you wanted to do the most though. Was to be a Runner. It was as if the maze was calling you. Begging you to step foot inside and run the stony corridors. But of course. No one would ever think to choose you.
You let out a growl as you kicked the dead plants in anger. "Woah what's going on here Greenie?" Yes. You were still being called Greenie. A whole two weeks and you still didn't remember your name. The boys could tell you were getting rather discouraged by that and tried their hardest not to draw too much attention to it, but it still hurt you. You just wanted to remember something. Even if it was just your name.
"I don't think I'm cut out for us Zart," you snapped. Kicking at another dead plant. He looked down in horror and you could see him trying his hardest to calm himself down.
"Well, it appears we won't be having any potatoes this month."
You let out another growl and resisted the urge to kick another poor plant. One thing that had unfortunately stayed the same. Was your unhealthy bursts of anger. No way did they seem to want to go anywhere.
"Hey, it's alright Greenie. We can find you another job. I'm sure Alby won't mind if you switch to a Builder." You screwed up your face. "Oh come on Greenie," Zart sighed, "It's either a Builder, Bricknick or Slopper. A Bricknick is just as boring as a Track-hoe and no one wants to be a Slopper."
"What about a Runner?"
Zart pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a breath of air, "You know full well why you can't be one of those."
"Fine. It was worth a shot." You noticed Alby walking by out the corner of your eye, and pointed him out to Zart who quickly flagged him down.
"Hey, there you two. What's going on?"
"I killed the potatoes," you replied blankly.
"Well, that's not good."
"It isn't. Guess I'll have to try harder next time," you replied. Zart elbowed you in the ribs. "Hey! Ugh, fine. Alby I was wondering," you turned to him and plastered a fake smile on your face, "If I would be able to- Be a Builder instead." You swore you almost choked on the words.
Alby let out a low whistle. "With Gally?"
"Slim it. It ain't my first choice." Alby chuckled before nodding his head.
"Of course you can. I'll inform him about it this evening." You pursed your lips and gave him a thumbs up.
"Until then," Zart cut in, handing you the now empty water bucket, "Go get me some more water."
