A Way Out (Clone Wars Fan Fic)

Chapter 5

Rex could hear chatter in the room where he was. He assumed he was in a makeshift medbay. He could hear other clones groan from beside him as another man approached him.

"No, you cannot get up. You have been shot in your leg, and you are in no condition to walk. So I suggest you sit back down before I restrain you."

Rex laughed. Kix was always looking out for his brothers, even if that meant threatening to lock them onto a bed so they could get some shut-eye.

Shut-eye...

Rex jolted up from where he was laying. How long had he been asleep? Where was the general? Was Fives alright? Had they found the Commander?

Rex's train of thought was interrupted when he felt Kix lay a hand on his shoulder. All the clones in the medbay were staring at him, worried about why their captain had suddenly sat up and was now looking around the room with a nervous expression.

"Captain."

Rex let out a breath he didn't know he was holding as he looked up at the soldier above him. Kix looked tired, and there were bags under his eyes from not sleeping. To be fair, he was sure that none of the clones or the general had gotten any sleep in the past week. With the commander missing and the sudden attacks by the Separatists, they were all on high alert.

Rex shook his head and his sense came back to him. He tried to stand up but was met with a fierce shot of pain traveling up his left leg. He wobbled and was about to fall over when Kix grabbed him by his bicep and steadied him.

"Hold on sir, your leg is injured and you can't stand."

Kix set Rex back onto the cot he was laying on just seconds ago.

" I'm going to contact General Skywalker, okay? He said to comm him when you woke up."

Rex only nodded before he lay his head back down and shut his eyes. He wasn't sure how much time passed, maybe it was a few seconds, or a couple of minutes, or even an hour (which wasn't very likely), but soon enough Anakin was storming through the door.

"REX!"

Anakin rushed over to Rex's cot and knelt down beside the soldier. Rex groaned while he sat up, and looked to see Anakin's nervous expression. He heard Kix mumble something into the General's ear, and Anakin gave a nod of his head before directing his attention back to Rex.

"Sir."

Rex kept his professional posture in front of his General and tried not to show how much pain he was in. His leg was throbbing.

"At ease, Rex. It looks like you got banged up pretty badly in that battle, huh?"

"Yes sir. If it wasn't for you and Fives, I'd probably be dead... Speaking of Fives, how is he?"

Rex looked around the medbay and to his dismay, Fives was nowhere to be seen. Anakin noticed his fear, and put a hand on Rex's shoulder, trying to comfort the wounded soldier.

"Don't worry. Fives was grazed in the shoulder by a bullet, but nothing serious happened. He received a bacta patch a while back and is now scouting with some other clones. We've been on high alert ever since this last battle."

Anakin could sense that Rex wasn't telling him something.

"Anything on your mind, Rex?"

The Captain looked down, and a flashback of Ahsoka played through his mind. She had been there, on the battlefield, right?

Rex couldn't tell if it was real, or just his head. Why would Ahsoka be on Florum?

"Well-- it's just that I thought I saw someone on the field. Someone who wasn't supposed to be there."

Rex blurted out. Anakin raised his eyebrows, interested in what the Captain was talking about.

"Who did you see, Rex?"

Rex looked down to the floor, and then back up at his general.

"I'm not sure if it was really them, and it could've just been my imagination. It's probably nothing, Sir.

Now Anakin was really interested. Why wouldn't Rex tell him who he saw?

"Rex, I want to know who you saw. That's an order."

Anakin didn't like ordering his men around like this, but it seemed like he would have to in order to get Rex talking.

"Well..."

Rex thought for a moment and decided to tell Anakin the truth, whether what he saw was real or not.

"It was the commander, Sir."
