"There might be another way to stop him." Korra said, her expression unreadable. "It's a long long shot, but Zaheer is always meditating into the spirit world, and I know exactly where he goes: Xai Bau's Grove."
Asami flinched at the sound of Zaheer's name. There was no way to tell what Korra was planning to do, and there was no way she'd be able to stop her. All she could do was wait for Korra to reveal her plans and hope she would be okay.
"If I could find him there, maybe I could somehow trap him."
There it was, this was how she was going to lose here. Korra was once again risking herself to save the world and Asami had no choice but to let her. It wasn't like she had any power to help her, of course she was a skilled fighter. In that aspect there was no doubt in her mind, but against four of the strongest benders she'd ever fought against? For that she had no real way to protect the ones she loved from harm. If she could just say something, anything to convince Korra to stay. Or even just rethink this insane endeavor, maybe she could protect her just this once.
Every time she tried to speak her throat caught on an overwhelming feeling. Of love for Korra, and fear for whatever was about to come for them. The lump in her throat only tightened when she waved off Lin's warning. It was official, Korra was doing this and no one was stopping her.
"I'll watch over her as she meditates." The words came out almost as easily as their friendship had developed the past few months. It wasn't something she was actively planning on saying, in fact she hadn't consciously thought about it until she had already said it.
But it was perfect. Someone did have to watchover Korra while she meditated, she would be in a state of subconsciousness. Extremely vulnerable to any form of attack and this way Asami could be of use. If she could help Korra in this inconsequential way it might ease her spirits. Knowing that even just for a moment there wasn't a thing in the world that could tear them apart. That was what she needed.
Asami watched as Mako, Bolin, Tonraq and Korra created a plan of action. They talked calmly, with intention and ease. As if anything about the situation at hand created a peaceful atmosphere. She was fighting a different battle then them entirely, and somehow she was losing all the same.
"You ready?" Asami looked up, Korra was staring her down. An uncanny crooked grin plastered across her face, on an occasion like this one it seemed inappropriate. Vaguely unsettling. "Yeah. Where- where were you thinking?" Asami asked. Korra grabbed her hand, pulling her out of the building they had been in and into the square of Zaofu.
"I know a place." she chuckled. Asami didn't have time to question it. Korra was holding her hand, it didn't escape her notice how soft her hands were. From years of fighting Asami naturally assumed they would have been scarred and calloused like her own. Other than a couple scars, they were soft. Familar despite it being the first time they were this close.
Korra led her all the way to her favorite spot in all of Zaofu, a network of fountains all connected by multi-level platforms. They settled on the section occupied by a small tree and stone decorations. Asami found it peculiar that Korra hadn't let go of her hand, not even when she was already sitting down. "Are you okay?" Asami asked. Reading Korra, her body launguage, her emotions, knowing what she was truly thinking was a methodical task.
One that she was slowly getting better at. Mostly because they thought and acted the same in many ways. Even if she was the last one who would ever admit it, they worked as a set. In part due to their increased understanding of eachother over the years. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" The question was clearly supposed to convince Asami.
The falter in her voice as she spoke however, only convinced her of the opposite. Asami placed her hand on Korra's knee. Her thumb tracing light patterns on the fabric of her sweats. "It's okay if you're scared." Asami whispered. Korra gulped, suppressing a frown before glancing to Asami. "I just don't know if I'm doing the right thing."
"I don't think there is a right thing to do here." Asami sighed. "It's not exactly a typical problem." There was a moment of silence between the two. Korra stared off into the quiet streets of the city from far off. Then back to Asami and her hand. Korra squeezed her hand in return. "Yeah. yeah you're right." She said. Nodding her head in appreciation of Asami's comfort, as well as her presence.
Korra adjusted herself so that her legs were crossed and her stance was unbreakable. Clearing her mind of all the stressors seemed impossible. Yet Asami's hand had never left her, still resting comfortably on her knee gave her a sense of comfort. She took a breath, falling into the meditative pose Tenzin had taught her. Asami waited quitely, soon enough Korra's breath paused eventually slowing to rythmic sighs.
"Korra?" Asami whispered. She was met with complete. Other than a small gasp, followed by a sigh. Her confirmation that she had made it. She scooted closer, staring at the girl in front of her. Her face was relaxed, at peace for the first time since they left Republic City. For that, Asami found herself relieved. She grazed her hand over Korra's cheekbone, moving her bangs out of her face and behind her ear.
Asami leaned over on her knees, pressing a kiss to Korra's forehead. A gasp left her mouth as she realized what she had done in broad daylight. Thankfully, no one was around to see her panic or the blush that had spread to her face. She moved a couple feet away from her friend, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her head. She fought back tears of shame as she glanced over at Korra for what could have been the thousandth time in five minutes.
Now there was no way she could avoid how she felt about her best friend. How she felt about Korra, it was real.
