Just a few days ago, it felt as if the autumn season was beginning its journey. Thousands of chattering leaves of gold and scarlet oranges roamed through the dry fickle air grasping on just for another day.

Trees whose once had many radiant bursts of colour were now decaying into dark naked slumps of bark. The greens of grass were no longer seen with fragments of tints but flattened under piles of flurries of snow.

After countless autumn skies and nights, winter had finally made its arrival. The soft cold breeze roamed around Avonlea, lightly seeping through clothing and onto their bare skins. The only form of heat was from the constant comfort of citizens bundling with another for the memorial of John Blythe.

People walked into a single file line dressed in all black garments, their heads laid low, emotions of grief and a series of frowns were all plastered onto faces.

"I will come again, and receive you unto myself; for where I am, there ye may be also." the minster spoke peacefully as he read the last line, closing the book in the process.

Commemorating the loss of John Blythe, everyone stood together mourning in silence once more.

As everyone started to walk away and enter the house, you looked over to Gilbert; wondering if approaching him was a good idea. As you stared at him in curiosity, the boy had started to walk away from everyone and into the distance of his father's grave. Turning away from him, you adverted your eyes ahead and decided it was best to leave him in peace.

The room was spilled out in various chatters, foods passed around to guests, and four friends knitted in their group, engaging in conversation but Anne.

Anne kept a close eye on the window, making out simple words with her friends. Yet she continued to stay focus outside, as she suddenly dashed away from her place, grabbing her coat and making her way out of the room.

"where is Anne going?" Ruby asked in a questioning tone while looking out the window.

"I think she's talking to Gilbert?" you said to ruby while grabbing a cookie and eating it happily.

--------------------------------------------------------

The four friends were all at Diana's house, baking a shepard's pie for Gilbert; hoping it would bring some sort of comfort to him.

As the girls finished up their conversation and made their way out of the house; entering the cold winter atmosphere.

The wind whirled softly and coldly through the air, surrounding the four girls as they walked peacefully towards their location.
Diana and Ruby were both linked together while Anne and you were slightly behind but not linked to one another.
"maybe i should go home" anne suddenly bursted out.

"were almost there though" you spoke to Anne.

Anne nodded in response. As she continued to walk, playing with her hands nervously, glancing up once in a while.

The walk was becoming shorter, as the house slowly came into view. All four girls made their way up the porch and knocking on the door.

Waiting for the boy to welcome them in. The only greeting was a shout from the inside, alerting them to enter.

As everyone started to make their way out, you couldn't help but want to stay even if it was just for a minute.
You couldn't help but feel sympathy for him; you couldn't imagine what he was going through nor could you ever go through that.

You slowly walked towards him but enough space to keep distant.

"how's it going?" you timidly spoke, not knowing how to start up a conversation.

It took a few seconds for the boy to leave his trance and figure his way out of his mind. His head slowly turning its position towards you.

"i had better days" Gilbert uttered as his face reminded completely neutral.

"may I?" you said, ushering towards the chair beside him.

Gilbert nodded, his gaze motioned in front of him now.

A few seconds of crisp silence past by, neither one of them speaking up.

"i bet he was a good man" you spoke, as you tried your best to keep contact at him.

"yeah, he was" Gilbert replied sadly, trying his best not to think about him.

"i cant imagine what you're going through but if you want to talk about it, just know that i'm here."

"and it doesn't have to be right now, only if you're comfortable to share."  you stated to the boy on your left, averting your glances between him and the wall in front of you.

Another couple of seconds past by of pure silence. You didn't think much of it because of everything that was happening to him; it was all stressful for him to function.

"thank you Y/n" the boy finally spoke up as his gaze reminded low.

"it's really no problem"you replied while smiling slightly.

Gilbert shifted his weight towards the right, his body now faced towards you and his eyes directed at you.

"you know i was kinda hoping you would talk to me. even if it hasn't been a whole day, it's been lonely here; without anyone's company." Gilbert sighed as his face was still turned towards you.

"well i'm here at least."

"yeah, you are... thanks" Gilbert chuckled lightly.

you smiled at him in response but this time your smile wasn't forced into anything fake but a smile of genuine enjoyment.
