The Start

Paige

            I cannot believe that just happened! Lauren can be soo melodramatic sometimes, but seriously! I really should have defended Karishma, but I just sat there like an idiot. I feel so stupid.

            “Karishma, are you okay?” I am really worried about her! She’s just sitting there silently crying with this distant look on her face which can only mean something bad.

            “Karishma…Karishma!” Now I’m freaking out! Why isn’t she answering me!

            “Oh my god! Karishma are you okay?” A familiar voice asked.

            “She won’t answer you; I’ve been trying for 5 min. now.” I say as I look up. It’s Alina! I wonder if Karishma has told her yet. Probably not, we’ve been in school the whole day and she only told me this morning. I feel like I should tell her but Karishma might get mad… oh well!

            “Umm…Alina, did Karishma tell you what happened yesterday?”

            “No…what happened?”

            “Well, you know how Karishma and Natalie like the same guy…I thought it’d be good idea to let Natalie know before she finds out another way, so after Karishma told her, Natalie started yelling at her and she ran home crying. She told me this morning.” I could feel the anger start to boil up in me as I recalled the memory.

            “Wait, so then why is she crying right now?”

            “Lauren caught Karishma talking to Jason and thought they were flirting when really he was apologizing for knocking her down this morning. I was there so I know she’s not lying. Well anyway Lauren yelled at her and ran off to sit with Natalie. She’s been sitting like this ever since and I’m really worried about her!”

            “Wow…that’s…a lot of drama!” Alina exclaimed.

            I couldn’t help but laugh.

            “No kidding!” I said while laughing.

            Wait a sec; something was really off here…Karishma’s still just sitting there.

            “Karishma…are you okay ‘cause you’re really starting to freak me out!” Still no answer!  Wait, what is she looking at?  Brrriiiiingggg!!! I guess I’ll find out later.

            “Look I’ll see you later Karishma.” I say as I walk away with Alina

She just nods as she goes to throw away her still untouched lunch.

“Paige, I think we better talk to her before things get worse. She has never been that quiet before! I’ll see you later to talk about that. Bye!”

“Okay, bye!” Alina always has ideas like this! That’s what I love about her! After we met her in grade six, she was always there for us and hates when we fight. She’s sort of like the psychiatrist of the group!

To be honest, I was sort of jealous of her for a while. She and Karishma always had this connection ‘cause they’re both Indian. I’m just your typical white skinned girl with silky golden brown hair and big hazel eyes, while Alina is tan with dark brown almost black hair and almond shaped dark brown eyes with long eyelashes. A lot of people say she looks sort of like Karishma and that scared me. I always so afraid Alina would take Karishma away from me but Karishma assured me she’d never let that happen. After a while I realized she would never do that and we became good friends.

Now, Alina and I had to find a way to bring Karishma back to her senses and I had a feeling that it wasn’t going to be easy.

            After school ended, I found Alina and Karishma waiting for me outside. Karishma’s mouth was pressed in to a rigid line and Alina looked uncomfortable standing there. As soon a she saw me, she ran up, Karishma slowly trailing behind her.

            “Have you talked to her yet?” I whispered.

            “I tried to but she just ignored me, like at lunch.” She replied.

            “Okay, well I guess we’ll just have to keep trying.”

            Alina just nods before pulling me along to catch up with Karishma who has decided to start walking home.

            “Hey Karishma!” I say as cheerfully as possible.

            “Hi.” She says barely audible.

            “Umm… I’ll see you guys later. Bye!” Alina yells before running up to her house.

            “Bye!” Great. Now I have to talk to Karishma all on my own. This is gonna be so fun.

            “Karishma, I know you’re upset, but this whole…thing is not your fault so blaming it on yourself is not the right idea.”

            “Paige, I know but it’s just that for so long we’ve all been friends, and suddenly we’ve sided off because of a stupid crush!” By now, there were tears streaming down her face.

            “It’s ok, it’ll all work out you’ll see!”

            “It won’t Paige and for now I’m with you and Alina. We haven’t done anything wrong and if they want to fight, then let’s fight!”

            “Now that’s the Karishma I know and love!!!” I smiled brightly happy to have her remotely back to normal!
