Thank you for the pink lilacs, Philipp.
.
The morning after the World Cup winning captain proposed to Katrina Russo was the end of a new beginning.
Katrina Russo was anything but normal, in Philipp Lahm's point of view.
She has only five days left to her life, and many things left not accomplished. Katrina had ordered the man to fill in the gaps of her heart when she would leave to a better place, wherever that may lie.
"Pink lilacs for my unglamorous fiancee," Philipp Lahm had rang the doorbell too early in the morning for anyone. He hid behind the bouquet of flowers, and let it down to his chest when the wooden door opened. Handing it over, he was quickly invited into the flat. "Were you making breakfast of some sort?"
"No, not at all. Care for coffee?" Philipp smiled.
"Ja, absolut." She loved it when he spoke in his native tongue. The way things rolled off in Philipp's language. Katrina would pick little things up, and attempt to speak it - only to have the latter grin at her try. "I'll join you in the kitchen, Katrina. Scrambled eggs sounds good?" She nodded at his suggestion. "Did you see the doctor yet?"
Katrina's hand faltered just a little bit. Bringing up talks of the doctor was only reminding her of her inevitable death. "I'm sorry," Philipp coughed out, mumbling. "I shouldn't have."
"It's alright," Katrina nervously laughs. "How many sugar do you want in your coffee, Philipp?"
"Two would be okay."
"Have you seen the doctor," Katrina blurted out. "About your ankle?" Philipp had been injured since December, and it was breaking Katrina's heart to not be able to see Philipp play on the pitch with Bayern Munich.
"That I have," Philipp replies, smiling bright. "He says I'll be good to go next month."
"Philipp," Katrina slowly stirred the coffee, letting the sugar dissolve. "I'm sorry." The silver spoon hits the glassware.
Philipp turned off the gas as he neatly placed the scrambled eggs onto the two plates. Quickly placing the pan down onto its original spot, he rushes to Katrina's side, holding her shaking form in his arms. "It's not your choice to leave this early, Katrina."
"I-I know," she murmurs against his chest. "I want to see you play, Philipp. And I know-" Katrina pauses mid-sentence, knowing she couldn't start talking without holding in her tears. "I'll never get to see you play again."
"I've already retired on the international side to be with you, to spend more time with you," Philipp wipes her tears away with his thumb. "I know you won't be there to watch me, but you'll see it from wherever you are, right?"
Katrina nodded. "That's all it matters," Philipp grabbed the bouquet of lilacs still wrapped in gloss paper closer. "Stop crying." Katrina obeyed the captain's remark. "I'll bring lilacs to you a day before every match after the last training ends. And make sure that one lilac will sit by the substitute stands," Philipp kisses her head. "To make sure that you can see just how many things I will achieve for you- for us."
