Thank you for the time you spent with me, Philipp. I'll never forget it.
.
Katrina Russo shut her hazel eyes in bed, and opened them again to face the white ceiling, as her efforts to drift off all failed.
"Philipp," Katrina shook him as he immediately wakes up, without the usual complains and groans. "I have to talk to you."
"What's wrong, Katrina?" The captain sat up, holding her hand.
"Today is my last day. I don't know what time I'll leave, but all I want is for you to be happy, be humble, be grateful- that we were together, that we had accomplished everything that I ever wanted." Philipp Lahm looked down at their intertwined fingers.
"Don't say that. I took the day off, I want to spend this day with you."
Katrina giggled. "All those years and you're still not tired of me yet?"
"I can never be tired of you," Philipp replied. "Maybe I'm just that type of person."
"I can never be tired of you either, Philipp. I love you too much for that."
"When you leave, are you going to forget me?"
"I'll forget," Philipp pouted. "Everyone but you." Philipp Lahm's smile returned on his face. "Philipp, you can't forget to smile all the time without me here, alright?"
"I'll smile a lot," Philipp promised. "So much that it'll hurt my jaw."
"Philipp," Katrina rubbed circles on his palm. "Thank you for the all the times you spent with me, I'm happy it lasted- I'm happy we lasted."
"Shouldn't I be thanking you?"
"No, I should thank you. Lasting in a relationship is difficult. You get tired of me, I get tired of you and eventually, everything falls apart. I'd ignore everything you say, and you'd think I'm the most annoying person ever." Katrina Russo pulled Philipp down onto the memory foam mattress. "But luckily, we never crumbled. You were always the one with the pink lilacs and yellow sunflowers, ringing my doorbell at nine in the morning, right before training." Philipp grinned, seemingly proud. "So Philipp Lahm, I want you to travel with your team, win more trophies, titles, contribute to charities and stay on your feet- until the day you can no longer move, you will look over to your children and your wife and say, 'I've lived a fulfilling life'." Philipp Lahm had tears streaming down his face, and some falling onto his white pillow.
"I've already lived a fulfilling life with y-" He was silenced with an index finger to his lips.
"No, you didn't. You don't have children with me; I wasn't able to give you any of that. Philipp,"
"What is it?"
"Be confident in yourself. You've already achieved so much more than so many others, and you are humble. That's what I love about you."
"Just don't go on," Philipp remarked. "I know, I know, I know! Why can't you keep on living? Why does the world have to be so cruel on me? I don't care about any titles, World Cup, Champions League, it doesn't matter if you're not here!" Philipp Lahm held her hand tighter. "Don't you realize that?"
Katrina nodded. "I do," Philipp wiped his tears away with his palm, which was now sweating. "I feel the same, Philipp. My eyes are getting tired, I want a nap..."
"You just woke up- No, you can't sleep. If you sleep, you'll drift far away."
Katrina shook her head, her breathing picking up steadily. "What comes must come, right...?" Her grasp loosen on Philipp's hand as she fell into his embrace; the captain had sat up as she crumpled down into his arms.
The man felt as if the entire solar system had been taken down, all by Katrina Russo. His smallest planet earth- gone with the soul of Katrina Russo's.
"Katrina. Katrina. Katrina," Philipp Lahm could never let anyone hear him whimper like that. "You can't leave like that." Philipp softly laughed in the room. He held Katrina in his arms, rocking her back and forth, as if he was comforting a child- tears rolling down his cheeks. "What am I going to do without you?"
Katrina Belle Russo never answered.
