A new beginning: all in a world that fell in five days without you.
.
Philipp Lahm was a man that believed in fate, choices, and new beginnings. Thirteen years. It took him thirteen years in order to get over that certain woman who once held such an important influence over him. A certain lass named Katrina Russo, who smiled like a fairy, laughed like an angel and caressed his heavy heart with a duty of relief.
The captain and Katrina's arguments had never been long lasting. It was always useless bickering about her escape from the house or attempting to do something dangerous without his approval, or supervision. But it would always be solved with the man's smile and a hug, with her favorite lilacs and sunflowers, placed at the doormat of her flat.
The flat where she had been living was sold to another couple, a pilot of Lufthansa and a flight attendant of her husband's plane. Philipp had remembered the couple going ballistic knowing that he was the one with the flat in hand. The pair almost gave out receiving the key from the captain, saying something like: 'This is such an honor' or 'I feel like I'm getting a medal from the World Cup winning captain here'.
Philipp Lahm's buddies, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller both managed to get the man involved in social activities again- thirteen years after the lass's passing. Of course, Bastian was the one who suggested him to try out a new relationship, which he was extremely reluctant on doing. He still recalls himself looking at the last note from Katrina at night, talking to it- and getting no response.
Then he'd visit her grave the next morning, holding a white lilac instead of her favorite pink ones. Her grave was a simple one at most; it had her name, date of birth, date of death, and the usual loving daughter, wife and friend remark she would usually critique- it was just like her to do that. Then Katrina would apologize to the skies, and say 'I didn't mean that though'.
She was unique in so many ways.
But she was just like every other girl who wanted protection from someone reliable, like Philipp Lahm himself.
"Philipp," Bastian tapped his shoulder, to wake up back up to reality. "You listening to me?"
Philipp shook his head. "No, sorry. I was thinking about something. What did you say?"
"I said I know a girl who seems to like you," he replies, walking next to Philipp. "Her name is Claudia. Maybe you'd fancy meeting her?"
"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Philipp answers, nodding at his friend's suggestion.
"Cool! I'll ask her to come over tomorrow when I come with Thomas." Bastian waved as he jogged over to Thomas, probably to tell him about Philipp's response.
It wasn't long until tomorrow really came into view that Bastian, Thomas and Claudia was sitting in his living room, on the couch- with Claudia sitting in Katrina's usual favorite spot.
Bastian and Thomas were nowhere in sight- they had nudged Philipp's arm and told him they'd be in the guest room playing FIFA for a while.
"So tell me about you, Claudia." She curled her hair back to her ears.
"Well," she began. "I'm Claudia, and I'm Bastian's friend who he thought you should meet." Claudia's hand was now extended, toward Philipp's direction.
"Well," Philipp smiled. "I'm Philipp, also Bastian's friend who he thought we should meet." Philipp Lahm took Claudia's hand and shook it.
Sometimes, love is this crazy thing that starts with a touch of the hand, and it did spark something for Philipp and Claudia.
Though, at the back of the captain's head, a huge load of Katrina Russo lingers. Even years later when Philipp and Claudia's son, Julian was born, Katrina's several last words were never ignored.
Philipp looked onto his family, now sitting in his living room, that same living room- with Julian drinking water from his Bayern Munich cup as Philipp whispered to the air:
"Sweetheart, I've lived a fulfilling life."
. End .
