Enoch worked steadily at a piece of wall taking the chunks of black chalky stuff and handing them to some of The Bleeding.  The Bleeding would place the rocks into carts and push them down the rocky halls.

He paused for a bit and wiped the sweat off his brow.  More black smeared across his forehead.  He breathed heavily, and reached into his pocket.  He pulled out two Golds, three Silvers, and a Grey.  He sat down.  After about five minutes a guard noticed.

He walked over to Enoch and said,  "Do you need a nap?"  He rested his hand on his stun baton,  "I could put you to sleep and make sure that you'd stay that way."  Enoch handed all the Coin he had to the guard without looking at him.  The guard looked around, pocketed the units, and walked away.

A boy of about sixteen with a dirty face looked at Enoch surprised.

        "How did you do that?"

Enoch looked up at the boy.

"Sit down."  The boy sat.  "What's your name, friend?"

        "My name is Bhikhu."

"What did you do to get down here?"

Bhikhu paused.  "My parents needed money, or they were going to be deported.  I heard about the Az Loan Corporation..."

"Right.  The 'Easy Az 1, 2, 3' Corporation."  Enoch mocked the popular advertisement.  They both chuckled and coughed a bit.

"Well, Bhikhu,"  Enoch continued.  "You must be a very brave man."  Bhikhu sat up a little straighter.  "I'm sure your parents are proud of you."  Enoch looked at the pickaxe he held between his knees.  "So you want to know about the guards?"

        Bhikhu nodded.

"They are just as desperate as you and me."  Bhikhu looked shocked.  "They are in debt to Az as well.  They just got a better job."

Bhikhu stuttered,  "But...if they are one of us...why do they hate us?"

Enoch looked straight at him.  "It's very hard to control power, and Az knows this."  Enoch turned and looked at the bends and crevices in the wall.  "The gaurds are about as corrupt as his mind.  Az controls people by giving them control over others."
